Negotiating as a life skill Negotiating is an everyday part of life • We negotiate with our children to get them up and out of the house • We negotiate with our spouse for who is going to do what chores • We negotiate everywhere we go, on the job and everywhere in our world • Having the necessary skills to negotiate towards a positive outcome is important
Basic Negotiating Skills Preparation • • • Problem Analysis • Looking at the issue from both sides and assessing the who, what & why • What are the small problems contributing to the big problems • Understanding both sides to come to a win-win solution Knowing what you and your opponent are seeking Knowing your mutual history is equally important What is or is not crucial to you both within the negotiation
Basic Negotiating Skills • • • Active Listening • Having the ability to read body language • Watching your opponents body signs and signals to learn what they are thinking • Interpreting/being a good judge these signs Emotional Control Keep emotions in check Be mindful of your personality traits Avoid/minimize your frustrations Be in control – keep your mind clear Show empathy to opponents who get emotional
Basic Negotiating Skills Collaboration & Teamwork • Work with the other side so you have a winwin collaboration • Promotion focus negotiation: outcomes that are beneficial to both parties because each party may not prioritize every issue the same way Verbal Communication • Listen to how others you respect speak and phrase things • Listen to word choices as well • Choose your words wisely
Basic Negotiating Skills Problem Solving • Finding the problems within the negotiation and looking for solutions to those problems • Avoid deadlocks – no one wins
Basic Negotiating Skills Decision Making Ability • Know your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to making decisions • If you struggle, find techniques that work for you Interpersonal Skills • • Great people skills are a plus If not naturally gifted, emulate those who are and learn to be a people person
