Basic First Aid
Objectives • To be able to identify common injuries and illnesses. • Recognise treatments for common injuries and illnesses.
Burns and Scalds- Causes • Spilled hot drinks • Boiling water or fat • Friction, chemical and electrical burns
Burns and Scalds-Treatment • Immediately apply running cold water. • After this apply cold compresses, ice packs or packets of frozen food to the area. • Take your animal to the vets for further treatment.
Snake Bite-Signs • Soft swelling around the two puncture wounds, this is usually on the neck or limbs. • Trembling. • Collapse. • Shock.
Snake Bite-Treatment • Do not let the animal walk, carry it to the car. • Keep the animal warm. • Take to the vets immediately.
Stings • Bee and wasp stings usually occur around the head, front limbs or mouth. • Will usually show sudden pain and will paw or lick the area. • A soft, painful swelling will appear. • Will be lethargic or unwell.
Sting-Treatment • If a bee sting, withdraw the sting. • Then bathe area, for wasps in vinegar and bicarbonate for bees. • A antihistamine injection maybe required from the vets.
Poisoning • • Can be poisoned by the following: Pesticides Herbicides Poisonous plants Paints Antifreeze Overdose of drugs
Corrosive poisoning- treatment • Wash the outside of the animals mouth • If, the animal is a dog give it milk and bread to protect the gut • Seek veterinary help
Other poisons-treatment • If conscious induce vomiting within half an hour of ingesting the poison • Two 15 ml spoonful's of strong salt solution to be given carefully by mouth • Seek veterinary assistance-Keep a sample of the vomit to give to the vet
Eyeball Prolapse • Can arise from head trauma. • The eye is forced out of its socket. • Sight is lost unless the eyeball is replaced within 15 minutes.
Eyeball Prolapse- Treatment • Speed is essential! • Seek veterinary assistance and follow and vets advise.
