Count in Latin outloud O Practice counting with the class 3 x in chorus. O Select 6 students randomly to pronounce and count the Latin Roots O Give either a Latin Root or English number and select students who can match the number with the root or vice versa.

Make Flash Cards for Roots 36 -50 O Write root in VERY LARGE PRINT on one side of the card. O Write definition on the other side of the card, slighly smaller print. O Write 3 words on the card that contain the root.
Topic Sentence Review Who can describe a topic sentence?
The Topic Sentence is O The main idea of your paragraph. There is only one main idea for a paragraph. O It states your position on a given topic. O It usually isn’t the first sentence in the paragraph. It follows the HOOK.
Practice writing Great Topic Sentences O Avoid using “you” or “I”. Try to use the main idea of topic as your subject. For example, “Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. “ Instead of “I believe it is important for you to eat a good breakfast. ”
Practice writing a Topic Sentence Have Students write a topic sentence for each prompt below and then have students read theirs to the class. Have Mrs. Hunt stamp their notebooks when all three are done correctly. O Should students wear uniforms? O Should you shower every day? O Should gardening be taught at school to all students?
The purpose of a hook O Starting a paragraph with a topic sentence is BORING!! O If you don’t want to bore your reader, then ADD A HOOK!!
The Hook 1. Introduces the topic to your reader 2. Provides some background information that helps to inform the reader and understand your position when you state it in the topic sentence. 3. It ENTICES the reader to keep reading!

Should Students Wear Uniforms? O Teenagers are very concerned with how they are viewed by their peers. Because of this, they want to dress to impress. Fashion styles communicate a lot more about you than who you are inside. What matters is who you are as a person and your abilities. So, public schools should take the focus away from fashion to the business of learning by mandating all students wear school uniforms.
A HOOK can be any number of sentences… O How many sentences was the HOOK that I used? O So, don’t get caught up on counting sentences. Your goal is to thoroughly respond to the prompt.
So now, pick one of the topic sentences you wrote and write a good HOOK for it that you can share with the entire class! Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Powell will check your work and you will get a stamp for it!
