BASIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Economical Design A simple design is better than a cluttered interface. Limit the use of too many different: Styles Colors Dialog Fonts styles
Simple Design Limit the number of objects on the screen. Users prefer Web page with limited use of "flash" and other screen techniques
Visual Arrangement Group screen elements together rather than scatter elements across the screen. For e. g. , align important text or images at the top of the screen. Group same items together and be consistent throughout the site
Screen Balance Distribute elements evenly across the screen. For example, a Web page should not be top heavy and leave little at the base of the screen.
Screen Symmetry Information elements balanced at the top and bottom, and the left and right around a center line
Information Placement In general, important information should be placed at the top left of the interface Designers must be aware of cultural differences among their users. For European cultures, ensure that elements read from left to right, top to bottom.
Consistent Spacing Use standard spacing over multiple screens. For e. g. use same term and image placement on multiple pages. Users prefer consistency that helps them quickly interpret information
Design for the human eye Clear, readable, and visible elements on interface screens. Use limited bright color. Many sites use too much color and not enough white space. Balance the use of large and small elements. Use graphics appropriately to convey information more quickly than text.
Coherent & consistent design Ensure a unified screen design rather than a screen of scattered element. For e. g. many corporate Web sites use the same colors and visuals across a complete Web site
