Basic Anime Vocab
Anime (an-ih-may) In Japan: cartoons/animation Everywhere else: Japanese cartoons/animation
Baka (baa-kaa) Stupid
Chibi (chee-bee) Cute, small, childish Small and/or cartoony versions of characters (Usually used to describe a person; can be used as a nickname)
Comic-Con/Convention (com-ick-con) Comic-Con: the actual event that happens in San Diego once a year where all the awesome people from all around the world gather to celebrate awesome things Convention: the same thing but generic (not name brand), less expensive, not as large, and in other places throughout the year
Cosplay (cos-play) A combination of the words “costume play” When people dress up as other people or characters (and adopt their persona)
Fandom (fan-dum) A combination of the words “fan kingdom” The group of fans surrounding or centered around a specific topic
Fangirl/boy (fan-gurl, fan-boi) Noun: a person who loves a particular thing Verb: to love said thing, usually in an active or obvious way
Fanservice (fan-suhr-vice) Material (in a given work) added to please the audience, majorly the male one Don’t worry, there is female-specific fanservice too!
Kawaii (kah-wai-ee) Cute, girly, pretty (Usually used to describe an object, but sometimes used to describe pretty/cute people)
Manga (mahn-gah) Japanese graphic novels or any drawn content of such a style
Otaku (oh-tahk-oo) A nerd/geek, usually one who loves anime/manga In Japan, otaku has a negative connotation, sort of like how nerd or geek does here.
Weeaboo (wee-ah-boo) Aka “Japanophile” Someone who has become overly obsessed with Japanese culture to the point of being pushy and/or offensive
Subs vs. Dubs Subtitles (subs): captions displayed at the bottom of a screen that tell you what the people/characters are saying Dubs: when something’s audio is translated into another language (and usually the characters’ mouth movements match the words)
