Entry requirements into Barry Sixth Form are 5 GCSE grade C. Certain subjects may have more stringent requirements (bespoke curricula can be devised for those students not meeting these requirements but have a particular talent / Maths and English resit opportunities are timetabled where appropriate). The majority of year 12 students study 4 A Level subjects plus the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate. Most continue to 3 full A 2 subjects plus WBQ in year 13 - the 4 th subject contributing an AS qualification.
Subjects are either GCE AS/A 2 or Level 3 BTEC. GCE courses are assessed by written examination. AS units are examined at the end of year 12 (40% of course); A 2 units are examined at the end of year 13 with Internal Controlled Assessment also completed in year 13 (the remaining 60%). Some BTEC courses may be wholly internally assessed, with Units being completed and assessed at intervals. Each BTEC course is a two year commitment as there is no opportunity to claim an AS grade.
Students may follow a mixed/wholly GCSE/wholly BTEC programme of study (Po. S). Each students’ Po. S is monitored to maximise academic potential and to present them with varied destinations post-sixth. Students need to select courses advisedly and in a considered manner – moving courses during year 12 is ill advised. All students complete the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate – wholly internally assessed - fully graded A*-E level 3 outcomes.
Each subject is timetabled 8 hour-long lessons per fortnight with WBQ timetabled on average 5 lessons. Therefore the majority of students are actively engaged in class for approximately 40 periods of a 50 period fortnightly timetable. The remaining periods need to be used wisely.
You will have a greater level of choice in the Sixth Form to devise your own study programme. You are expected to work independently in reading around your subjects and completing additional learning tasks. This is not an optional extra but a basic requirement that will enhance your performance. You will be expected to involve yourself within the school community by participating in various activities. Your attendance will be monitored and challenged.
All students in the Barry Sixth Form are required to wear uniform and to present themselves neatly and appropriately for working in a school environment. This also applies to the wearing of jewellery. White Shirt/Blouse Barry Sixth Form tie Black Jumper with the Barry Sixth Form logo Black trousers (no jeans or leggings) or skirt Black shoes Optional black blazer
Preparing for Post-Sixth For many this will involve an UCAS application to further academic progress. Others may seek apprenticeships or employment. All are supported, encouraged and guided with their choices postsixth. Many ex-students are still in touch.
