Intro • Students will trace the origin of symbolism, imagery and metaphor in art and demonstrate the use of these visual devices in their artworks by creating selfportrait still life's.
Intro Continued • Students will compare and contrast the artistic styles and subject matter in artworks by artists of different cultures and time periods by navigating through various websites to find the symbolic significance of still life's or Vanitas first used in the Baroque/Rococo period. The first is from the artist Harmen Steenwyck called Vanitas Stilllife done in 1630 and the second done by artist Audrey Flack in 1977.

nd 2 Task • Find out who painted this painting. • Next, analyze the painting and read the information provided to see what each object symbolizes or represents.
• Write down who the artist is and what the following objects symbolize. – Skull – Shell – Books – Purple Silk – Japanese Samurai – Jar Click on the picture!
3 rd Task • Now lets look at a Contemporar y Vanitas done by the artist Audrey Flack. Find out what the following objects in her painting symbolize.
• Find out what these objects symbolize – Hourglass – Calendar – Clock – Lipstick – Perfume – Compact – Jewellery – Fruit – Paint Brush – Picture of Marilyn and the Mirror – Pictures of the Children Click on the Painting!
