Baroque Suite ● Instrumental music has always been closely linked with dancing ● Suites: Sets of dance-inspired movements ○ Made up of movements all written in same key, but with different tempo, meter & character ● Played in private homes, court concerts, or background music for dinners & outdoor festivities ● Usually in Binary Form (A A B B) ● Begin with movement not dance-inspired ● French Overture: Dotted rhythms, full of dignity & grandeur

Chorale ● Lutheran church services: social hour, lasted 4 hours, music was important ○ Each service included several hymns or chorales ● Chorale: hymn tune, sung to German religious text ○ Congregational singing of chorales was important way for people to participate directly in the service ○ Easy to sing & remember (Similar to Amazing Grace) ● By using traditional tunes in their compositions, composers could involve the congregation & enhance the religious associations
Church Cantata ● Cantata: a piece that is sung ○ Sonata: a piece that is played ● Cantatas might last 25 minutes, include several different movements ○ Resembled operas of the time with choruses, recitatives, arias, & duets ● Church music directors had to provide church cantatas for every Sunday & holiday
