Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio • Probably the most revolutionary Italian artist of his time • He is considered the first great representative of the Baroque school of art. • Never lacked for commissions or patrons, yet he handled his success poorly. • He abandoned the rules that had guided a century of artists before him. They had idealized the human and religious experience. • He painted the saints and bible figures as normal everyday people. The works caused public outcry, however, because of their realistic and dramatic nature.
Life • Was considered fascinating, rebellious and dangerous. • "after a fortnight's work he will swagger about for a month or two with a sword at his side and a servant following him, from one ballcourt (bar) to the next, ever ready to engage in a fight or an argument, so that it is most awkward to get along with him.
