Bardejov is a town in North-Eastern Slovakia. It is situated in the Šariš region on a floodplain of the Topľa River, in the hills of the Beskyd Mountains. It has many cultural monuments and a well preserved medieval town centre. The town is a UNESCO's World Heritage Site and currently has a population of around 32, 000 people.
During the fourteenth and fifteenth century the city became very wealthy and famous. The original medieval city centre is a mix of roads and buildings surrounded by a fortified wall. The city centre has a rectangle shape and is dominated by the Basilica of Saint Egidius, the town hall and a row of burghers’ houses. In 1950, Bardejov was declared a protected city and restoration of its cultural heritage began. On November 20, 2000, Bardejov was selected by UNESCO as one of its World Heritage Sites, recognised for its Jewish Quarter and historic town centre.
