Barcelona, Spain’s largest city after Madrid and the capital of the autonomous region of catalonia, owes its fame to Gaudi’s works that have become the identity of the city layout dating back to the 1900 s. SEVEN HILLS IN BARCELONA
CARMEL ( Park Guell ) It started with the construction of his house, Palau Guell for the architect Gaudi, who ordered a garden city on a high hill in Barcelona. The construction of this garden-town house, which was planned to include houses, a square to gather at various social events, gardens and other communal areas, was completed in 1914 and then did not continue. However , the park, which has two breathtaking beauties, including 2 houses, squares, 3 viaducts, a columned hall and Gaudi’s house, was converted into a public park in 1922.
LA ROVIRA During the Spanish Civil War, the fascist Italian Legionary Air Force used Barcelona as its first testing ground in the brutal tactic of «carpet bombing» which eventually became routine practice in the Second World War. La Rovira Has a height of 262 metres and it is the highest park in Barcelona’s urban fabric.
LA PEIRA The Turó de la Peira neighbourhood was first established in the early 1960 s in Barcelona, and encroached on part of a large area of parkland, which now occupies an area of some 8 hectares. The first park in the Nou Barris district opened in 1936 and was remodelled in 1977, using land that once belonged to the old farmhouse of Can Peguera. It slopes up the hill from which it takes its name in a spiral of circular paths that take us to the top which is crowned by a cross. The top of the hill can also be reached by a series of stone steps. On the way up there are landscaped grass areas and, near the top, the leafy pine grove. There areas for relaxation, with benches, viewing platforms and children's
DEL PUTXET The Putxet is a small mountain of 178 meters between Vallcarca and Sant Gervasi. the first vestiges of settlement known are around 1870, when the bourgeoisie of Barcelona began to build towers to move around due to the urban conditions of the old Barcelona. Due to the variety of plants and their location, it could be said that the Putxet Hill is a neatly landscaped forest. Despite the inclination of the terrain, it is a good place to take a walk, and they are quite frequented by the neighborhood to cross it, either up or down, avoiding traffic.
CREUETA DEL COLL On the hill called as Creueta del Coll, among the populous neighbourhood of Vallcarca and Gracia two very different elements coexist: on the one hand from its entrance, an urban park that features a stunning lagoon located between rocky walls carved into the mountain and where a striking sculpture by Eduardo Chillida hangs. This curious lagoon becomes the summer months in a local swimming pool when sun and warm temperatures arrive to Barcelona.
MONTEROLS Monterols hill, also known as Gil hill (after its former owner) at the start of the last century, is one of the spaces that Nicolau M. Rubió i Tudurí, the man in charge of Barcelona’s parks and gardens for many years, included in the system of green areas he designed for the city around 1926. It was part of an of private estate with gardens and woodland, whose highest and steepest part had never been built on when it was acquired by Barcelona City Council in the 1940 s and turned into a public park. Monterols was officially opened on 8 July 1947, after it had been remodelled by then director for Parks and Gardens, and architect,
MODELELL The gardens of Parc del Putget are one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Barcelona with a 360 degrees view of the city.
TOURISTIC PLACES IN BARCELONA
SAGRADA FAMILIA CHURCH The Sagrada Familia church is Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí's greatest masterpiece, but he never lived to see his most legendary creation come fully to life. In fact, none of us have (yet). The church is still under construction, with completion scheduled for 2026—a century after Gaudí's death. The church's first tower, on the Nativity façade, was completed in 1925. Sadly, it was the only tower that Gaudí would live to see rise. He died on June 10, 1926 after a freak accident involving a tram, and his remains are interred in the Sagrada Familia's crypt.
CASA BATLLÓ Casa Batlló is a famous building created and designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1904 to 1906. The building is located in the centre of Barcelona city. Casa Batlló has a unique architectural style and is known locally as "Casa Dels Ossos" which means "House of Bones" because of its skeletal appearance.
CASA MILÀ Known as La Pedera, the quarry, the building was inspired by the Modernista movement, Spain’s version of Art Nouveau. . Constructed in 1912 for Roser Segimon and Pere Milà, the building is divided into nine levels: basement, ground floor, mezzanine, main floor, four upper floors, and attic. The building surrounds two interior courtyards, making for a figure-eight shape in plan. On the roof is the famous sculpture terrace. Practically, it houses skylights, emergency stairs, fans, and chimneys, but each function’s envelope takes on an autonomously sculptural quality which has become a part of the building itself.
