HISTORY • The first idea about Barcode was developed by Bernard Silver and Norman Joseph Woodland in 1948. • On 20 October 1949 Woodland Silver launched their pattern application for "Classifying Apparatus and Method“. The patent was issued on 7 October 1952 as US Patent 2, 612, 994. • The first product to have a bar code included was a packet of Wrigley's Gum at a Marsh's supermarket in Troy, Ohio in June of 1974.
International Article Number (EAN) • An EAN-13 barcode (originally European Article Number, but now renamed International Article Number) is a 13 digit (12 data and 1 check). • The EAN-13 barcode is defined by the standards organization GS 1. • The less commonly used EAN-8 barcodes are used also for marking retail goods; it usually reserved for smaller items, for example cigarettes, chewing gum packets, lipstick…
EAN-13 barcode • The country code: the first two or three digits, it identifies the GS 1 Member Organization which the manufacturer has joined. • The Company code: may be consist of four, five or six next digits. This number was licensed by EAN in each country. • The code item: may be consist of five, four or three digits, depend on The company code. • The check digit: the thirteen digit. ( Depend on the twelve digit before)
EAN-8 • The country code: the first three digits. • The code item: may be consist four next digits. • The check digit: the last one.
