CHECKING ACCOUNTS > Checking Accounts can be opened at any bank > Things to know – There is a monthly fee or a required minimum balance to avoid the fee – A savings account is often opened with the checking account. Know where your money is deposited – A debit card comes with your checking account. The number on the card is not your checking account number – Always ask what the routing and account numbers are for your accounts. You will need this to set up direct deposit and to use Webcheck for payments

ELECTRONIC BANKING AND ATMs > Electronic fund transfer is a substitute for checks > Automated Teller Machine (ATM) – Direct deposit/Webcheck payments – Online banking – Point-of-Sale Transfers (used at businesses)
ATM USAGE > Convenient to use. ATMS that do not belong to your bank may charge a fee. A warning message will appear about the fee prior to completing the transaction > Be careful when using an ATM > Memorize your personal identification number. Do not write it down > Be very watchful in public places when entering your PIN > Hold on to receipts. Don’t toss them in public trash cans > Always know how much money you have in your accounts
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: FINANCIAL INFORMATION > Shred all personal information you do not intend to keep > Monitor your online banking statements frequently. Use the bank website and the bank mobile app > Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. Memorize the password > Contact your bank or credit card company immediately if you suspect fraudulent charges > When traveling outside of the state, notify your bank of your travel plans so you can continue to use your debit and credit card
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: MAIL > Mail bills and letters at the post office or use e-billing > Check your mailbox regularly – UW will email you about checks we send > Be cautious when checks are sent to your home address. If the mail is not received in a timely manner, call the sender
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: IDENTIFICATION > > Protect your wallet and purse at all times Limit the number of cards and ID you carry Obtain a photo ID card at the Department of Motor Vehicles Do not carry your social security card, passport, or birth certificate unless there is an immediate purpose > Do not carry your PIN with your debit or credit cards
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: CREDIT CARD > Check your surroundings when using your debit or credit cards in public places > Review your bill regularly and contact the bank if you see any transactions you don’t recognize > Be aware if someone is watching you enter your PIN when making purchases in a store or using the ATM.
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: ONLINE > Limit on-line purchases to secure websites – Purchase from trustworthy vendors or use respected 3 rd party payment services > Keep up-to-date anti-virus software installed on your computer > Do not make online purchases from public computers > Do not share passwords to online merchants with friends
