New Junior Cycle Timeframe BANAGHER COLLEGE, 2020

SUBJECTS • Students will study a maximum of ten subjects for assessment by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). • Apart from English, Irish and Mathematics, each subject will require a minimum of 200 hours of timetabled student engagement that includes teaching, learning and assessment activity. • English, Irish and Mathematics will each require a minimum of 240 hours of timetabled student engagement. SUBJECTS • Most students will study between eight and ten subjects or their equivalents. Where students are studying a combination of subjects and short courses, a maximum number of eight subjects can be studied for assessment by the SEC for students studying three or four short courses. • A maximum number of nine subjects can be studied for assessment by the SEC for students studying one or two short courses. • Irish, English, Maths Higher and Ordinary Level • All other subjects will be at common level BANAGHER COLLEGE, 2020

SUBJECTS • CSPE no longer an exam subject but will be included under Wellbeing as a subject (70 hours) or a short course (100 Hours) • Wellbeing includes CSPE, SPHE and other areas such as Guidance and school provided courses/units/activities • Wellbeing currently stands at 300 hours and will rise to 400 hours by 2020. Level 1 and Level 2 Awards • Level 1 Learning programmes (learning difficulties -low moderate and severe and profound) and • Level 2 Learning programmes (general learning difficulties/needs low mild to high moderate range of ability) are now available • JCSP programme is continuing BANAGHER COLLEGE, 2020

Assessment at Junior Cert • Ongoing assessments, including routine teacher-designed tasks and tests • Ongoing assessment for students undertaking priority learning units at Level 2 • Structured Classroom-Based Assessments (CBA’s) for subjects conducted in second and third year • A written Assessment Task for subjects that will be based on the second Classroom-Based Assessment and will be submitted to the SEC for marking along with the statecertified examination • An externally assessed, state-certified examination for subjects at the end of third year (No more than 2 hours duration) • Specific arrangements for ‘practical’ subjects BANAGHER COLLEGE, 2020

Classroom Based Assessments CBA’s • Students undertake two Classroom-Based Assessments facilitated by their teacher, generally one in second year and one in third year. • Classroom-Based Assessments in all subjects are specified at a common level. • The assessments associated with CBAs cover a broad range of activities, including oral tasks, written work of different types, practical or designing and making tasks, artistic performances, scientific experiments, projects or other suitable tasks, depending on the subject in question. Classroom Based Assessments CBA’s • Visual Art, Music, Home Economics and the Technology subjects) involve practical work, or a performance, is currently marked by the SEC. These subjects will continue to have an external SEC assessment of the practical work, performance. • CBAs will be undertaken by students within class time to a national timetable. www. ncca. ie. • The CBAs are assessed by the students’ teachers, and the outcomes will be reported to the students and parents/guardians. Teachers engage in Subject Learning and Assessment Review meetings. Assessment Task • The Assessment Task will be completed in class under the supervision of the teacher. • The written Assessment Task for each subject will be specified by the NCCA in conjunction with the SEC and published by the NCCA. • The Assessment Task will relate to the learning outcomes of the second CBA • The Assessment Task will be returned to the SEC for marking and will be marked as part of the Final Examination. • The value to be assigned to the Assessment Task is included in the assessment guidelines for each subject. • A separate Assessment Task will not be required in practical subjects where there will be a practical • examination BANAGHER COLLEGE, 2020
