Comparing/Contrasting Balanced Literacy Models Preview all 5 models with your small group. 1. Discuss the similarities and differences between each model. (Take notes on the graphic organizer. ) 2. Come up with a group definition for balanced literacy based on your investigation of the models. 3. Decide on key elements that should be included in all balanced literacy approaches. List them on your graphic organizer.

Your Ideal BL Model In your school-based groups, using chart paper, develop a visual representation of an ideal balanced literacy approach for your school.
Literacy Model Gallery Walk § Take time to reflect on each group’s balanced literacy model. Add reflective comments and/or questions using the postits provided. § As you walk, consider the following: § What do you notice that is similar from model to model? § What differences stand out to you? § What is one component that you noticed on a model that was not included on yours? § Did you notice the key elements of balanced literacy that were generated earlier represented in the models?
