English at primary school in Indonesia • English is as muatan lokal. • The conditions of languages being used by students in Indonesia. • There around 700 languages in Indonesia most students speak local languages such as Javanese, Bataknese, Sundanese, Balinese, etc • Most students do not use Indonesian as mother tongue. • Indonesian is the “second language” for most primary schooler.
English at primary school in Indonesia • Indonesian is as the medium of instruction in primary school. • Students learn subjects (math, science, social science) at school through English. • The focus of curriculum is to empower the use of Indonesian to optimize students skills in learning other subjects (basic skills such as counting, social life, etc).
English at primary school in Indonesia • As a muatan lokal, it does not mean that English cannot be taught. • School can consider whether the students need English. • There is a need for people living in Jakarta to learn English from primary school. Some schools have English courses.
