Summarizing Text A summary is a condensed version of a passage It presents only the most important ideas of a passage
When do I summarize? When you simply want to give your readers a brief overview of a passage
The guidelines • Include only the main points of the original passage • Do not worry about following the original order of ideas • Keep the length down to no more than half the length of the original
Steps of Summarizing Text Identify the main idea Write the most important details that support the main idea Shorten the summary Read over the summary
