Objective of Skills Portfolio Self-marketing tool to assist with transition from school-to-work. u Assists with self-assessment, career planning and preparation for job interviews. u Preparation as important as final product u Helps you learn what you know, what you’ve done and how to articulate and illustrate this – Critical for interviews! u

Structure – Section 1 u Mock Cover Letter & Resume - must be developed using an actual job description – include job description in your portfolio - job chosen must be attainable – don’t shoot too high or too low - Resume – Max. 2 pgs. - Cover Letter – Max. 1 pg.
Structure – Section 2 -5 u Interview Questions - Must answer all questions under each base competency – see handout) per Base Competency using the SAR formula - Each response a couple of paragraphs. - Each response must be supported by 1 -2 pieces of evidence
Structure – Section 6 u Table Listing Strengths and Areas Needing Development - helpful to generate this list using the skills provided for interview questions - likely they will become obvious as you select your interview questions - review each question and decide which ones you could answer easily, and which ones you would get stumped on – this will highlight strengths and areas needing development
Examples: SAR Formula u SAR – Formula to be used to answer interview questions for your portfolio. u SAR = – Situation (or task/problem) – Action Taken – Result/Outcome
Example: Interview Response Using SAR u Skill: Leadership/Influence u Question: Give me an example of a time when you showed initiative and took the lead.
SAR cont’d u u Situation (S): Advertising revenue was falling off for my college newspaper, The Stetson Reporter, and large numbers of long-term advertisers were not renewing contracts. Action (A): I designed a new promotional packet to go with the rate sheet and compared the benefits of Reporter circulation with other ad media in the area. I also set-up a special training session for the account executives with a School of Business Administration professor who discussed competitive selling strategies.
SAR cont’d Result (R): We signed contracts with 15 former advertisers for daily ads and five for special supplements. We increased our new advertisers by 20 percent [quantities are always good] over the same period last year.
