Schedule configuration Recurrence Pattern Summary Start Date and Time Backup Calendar Relative Windows Queue duration Cancel duration Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 13
Start Date and Time • Date – Effective date for the schedule – Initialized to current date on media server – First recurrence date can be different for weekly, monthly and yearly schedules • E. g. Start Date: 1 st August 2011. Schedule: 10 th of every month. • Time – Time at which recurrence will be started – Typical values – 11 pm for backup jobs and 11 am for an Archive job Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 14
Queue duration (backup window) • Relative to the start time of the recurrence • Maximum limit of 10 days – Expressed as # minutes for minutes based hourly schedule – Expressed as # hours for rest of the scheduling options • Effective: duration between two recurrences or defined/default value, whichever is minimum • Duration after which missed job alert will be raised, with job being rescheduled to next recurrence – E. g. Daily schedule with 2 day interval and queue duration of 10 days Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 15
Cancel duration (auto-cancel period) • Old – auto-cancel duration on selection list – relative to actual start time of recurrence • New – part of main schedule – relative to scheduled start time of recurrence • Optional; if not defined job will run till completion or until cancelled • Greater than queue duration • If defined, maximum limit of 999 hours with default value of “Queue windows + 1“ hours Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 16
Hourly Schedule • Minutes based • Hours based – Default frequency: 60 minutes hour – Max frequency: 999 minutes – Default frequency: 1 hour – Max frequency: 999 hours Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 17
Daily schedule • Day based • Weekday based – Default option – Frequency: every week – Default frequency: 1 day – Monday through Friday – Max frequency: 999 days Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 18
Weekly Schedule • Default frequency 1 week • Maximum frequency 99 weeks Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 19
Weekly Schedule • Minimum one day should be selected • Day of the schedule start date considered as reference point for applying weekly frequency – E. g. Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday of every 2 weeks and schedule start date is on Thursday. Recurrences: Thursday & Saturday (this week) and then Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday of every 2 nd week. Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 20
Monthly Schedule (Specific Day) Day of month Index, Day • Default option for monthly schedule • Day of Month – Only one day can be selected Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 21
Monthly Schedule • Day of Month contd. . – Default value: day of month for schedule start date – Max limit: 31 – Safe value for ‘Last day of month’ (SIG schedule): 31 • Recurrence frequency: default 1 month and max 99 months • Schedule start date is considered as reference point for applying monthly recurrence frequency – E. g. Schedule start date 15 th Jun 2011, frequency 2 months, and day of month 1 st. First recurrence: 1 st July 2011 Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 22
Monthly Schedule (Specific Weekday) • Index – First, second, third, fourth and last – Default: week number of schedule start date • Day – Sun through Sat, day, weekend day • • One specific week day in Sunday through Saturday Day: any one weekday in Sunday through Saturday Weekday: any one day in Monday through Friday Weekend day: Saturday or Sunday – Default: Week day of schedule start date • Recurrence frequency: default 1 month and max 99 months • E. g. Third weekend day – Count 3 rd weekend day of the month ignoring the Saturday / Sunday identity Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 23
Monthly Schedule (Specific Weekday) • Examples – Third Wednesday – Fourth day current month starts on Sunday 1 st Wednesday – Third weekday current month starts on Friday 1 st Tuesday – Fourth weekend day current month starts on Friday 2 nd Sunday Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 24
Yearly Schedule • Yearly recurrence frequency: default 1 year, max 99 years • ‘Specific month’ – In addition to fields in monthly schedule • Defaulted to Month of scheduled start date • Scheduled start date is considered as reference point for applying yearly recurrence frequency Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 25
Rules based (linked jobs) • Scheduled – Just like any other scheduled job – User can configure queue and cancel duration • ‘Immediately after’ regardless of success or failure – Default queue duration = 24 hours – Default cancel duration = 240 hours Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 26
DST Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 27
DST Start • Specific time range never occurs i. e. invalid • Scheduler delays recurrence start time in invalid time to 1 st time instance after invalid range – US DST Start 2 nd Sunday of March – Invalid time [02: 00 – 02: 59] – Daily recurrence with start time 02: 15: 00 and 1 day interval • Day previous to DST start – 02: 15: 00 EST • DST Start day – 03: 00 EDT • Day next to DST start – 02: 15: 00 EDT – Hourly schedule of 90 minutes recurrence pattern • Previous recurrence – 01: 00 EST • Next recurrence – 03: 30: 00 EDT [90 minutes away, lost hour incorporated] • Subsequent next recurrence – 05: 00 EDT and then every 90 minutes Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 28
DST End • Specific time range occurs twice (‘ambiguous’ local time pairs) • Between the two local times, scheduler considers the time point in DST for an ambiguous recurrence start time – US DST End 1 st Sunday of November – ambiguous time [01: 00 – 01: 59] – Daily recurrence with start time 01: 15: 00 and 1 day interval • Day previous to DST start – 01: 15: 00 EDT • DST End day – 01: 15: 00 EDT • Day next to DST End – 01: 15: 00 EST – Hourly schedule of 60 minutes recurrence pattern • Previous recurrence – 00: 15: 00 EDT • Next recurrences – 01: 15: 00 EDT, 01: 15: 00 EST, 02: 15: 00 EST Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 29
Exclude Dates Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 30
Exclude dates • Aligned with 24 hours of the excluded day • Global – at media server level • Job Impacts – Affect jobs with recurring schedules only – Run Now, run once, directly linked jobs are not impacted • Configuration – Add / delete – Import / export – Calendar view • Import / export using flat file – Bulk transfer to other media server – File Format • One on each line • Support media server locale format – On errors in parsing, only successful dates will be imported – Merged with existing exclude dates on media server Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 31
Configuring exclude dates Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 32
Impact on schedules • In scenario 1 and 2, both queue and cancel durations are truncated at the start of the exclude date which indicates that if the job hasn’t started running on commencement of exclude date then it will be reported as missed and a running job will be auto-cancelled. • For scenario 2, the queue and cancel windows are split by the exclude date. For such case only the 1 st of the fragments are consider. • In Scenario 3 if the start time occurs on exclude date , the job will not start. Backup Exec 2012 (Gold) Improved Notification Dhananjay Joshi Senior Software Engineer Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 46
TOI Agenda • Introduction • Background • Architecture • Configuration • Summary • Questions & Answers Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 47
Introduction ( 1/2) • Replaces SIG notification component • Integrates into Backup Exec – BE Server integration – Notification UI integrated into BE UI with standard look and feel – Logging and Help file integration • Comprehensive SMTP support – EOLed Channels: Printer, Pager, VIM , MAPI and Net-Send. – SMS support based on SMTP – Support for “MS Exchange”, “Lotus notes” and other online mailing system like “Gmail”, “yahoo”, etc. through SMTP – Full “TLS and Authentication” support Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 48
Introduction ( 2/2) • Recipient group management, “Group” in “Group” is not supported • “Notification Scheduling” has been removed • Unchanged: SNMP channel to send alert is still present (was not a part of SIG Notification) • Attachment size of upto 50 MB. (tested size ) Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 49
Background • SIG Notification was used as 3 rd party library in BE and other Symantec products for notification • SIG Notification comes with its own UI dialog box and had a fixed set of channels, many of which are no more applicable • Many escalation defects due to “libvx notification” modules • SMTP channel in SIG notification had issues, “TLS and Authentication” did not work on all setups, workaround was to use MAPI or VIM • Separate logging mechanism (due to SIG origin) • Too many dlls, large code base to support multiple platform which was difficult to maintain Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 50
Architecture ( Improved Notification ) BE UI: BE UI with Notification related windows WCF Web Services layer Managed BEMSDK wrapper BEMSDK BE Server Notification BO BE DB (Interface, stored procedure) BE DB “Managed Notification” dispatcher (C# dll) Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 51
Architecture Detail • In new Notification database access is completely merged in “bedb module”. • Same code works for 32 and 64 bit, so no requirement for SHIM which was used for 64 bit MAPI ( MAPI is any way EOLed) • Configuration for SMS notification have been enhanced for user. • “SMS notification” are sent as SMTP mail to mail address provided by services provider ( mobile number@domain. com) – For example if services provider is “Airtel” and if Airtel provides a SMS gateway like mobile_number@airtel. com, then SMS notification can be sent to given recipient. Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 52
Configuration • Configuration for “Recipient”, “Recipient Group” and SMTP settings are almost same as were in pre Honshu with few changes. – Configuration for all EOL’ed channel has been removed – Notification schedule for recipient has been removed – “Group in Group” no more supported – Added new configuration for SMS recipient Note: In all other places in UI, i. e. in “alert configuration” or “Job properties” where list of recipient is required, configuration remains the same. Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 53
Configuration Screen shots (SMTP) Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 54
Configuration Screen shots (SMTP) SMS provider domain for all recipients and can be overridden for an individual recipient Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 55
Configuration Screen shots (SMTP) SMTP Email authentication now works flawless for all mail servers Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 56
Configuration Screen shots (Recipients) Circuit breaker for notification remains same, but Scheduled Notification part has been removed Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 57
Configuration Screen shots (Recipients) New Configuration to configure mobile number to receive SMS notification Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 58
Configuration Screen shots (Recipients) BE Admin can provide phone number in multiple ways , number can include “. + - ( ) /” and ‘space’ Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 59
Configuration Screen shots (Recipients) If SMS services provider domain is provided here then, this will override the default value Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 60
Configuration Screen shots (Groups) No Internal Groups are allowed Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 61
Configuration Screen shots (Alerts) Continues to support SNMP Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 62
Configuration Screen shots (Job Options) New UI, notification related functionality remain same. Note: because of change in design no notification for change in “selection list” Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 63
Summary • SIG Notification has been removed • Printer, Net send, Pager, VIM, MAPI channels are EOLed • Now SMTP channel works with all possible mail setups (provided “Mail Server” support SMTP) • UI has been modified/simplified • Simplified way to configure SMS recipient • Logging is simplified Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 64

Scheduler Upgrade Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 68
Rules • Factors considered in conversion – Maximize chances for data protection – Preference to pattern based schedule, else create daily schedule with ‘n’ day repeat interval • Specific include dates considered only if no other SIG scheduling option is defined • Patch up with default schedule (e. g. every Friday 11 pm) if – Conversion is not possible (e. g. only one specific include date is configured) – Original SIG schedule is corrupt (e. g. XML corruption) • Specific excludes are not converted to global excludes • No yearly recurrence in SIG schedule migration will never generate yearly schedules Feature Name 69 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Rules (continued…) • Not all SIG schedules easily fit into new schedules generate approximate schedule – Multiple days of month (1 st, 3 rd, 14 th, 19 th, 22 nd, 31 st in single monthly schedule) Daily schedule with repeat interval set to highest frequency interval (days) between consecutive selected days or else weighted average of the intervals No splitting of schedule to create 6 new day of month schedules, each with one of the above days as it would have resulted into a large number of jobs – Different days of week selected for different weeks(1 st week: Mon+Wed, 2 nd week: Tue+Fri, 3 rd week: no days, etc. ) for which no pattern can be deduced create daily schedule with repeat interval set to weighted average of the intervals between consecutive selected days – Only specific include dates selected daily schedule with repeat interval set to highest frequency interval (days) between consecutive specific dates or else weighted average of the intervals • Approximate / default schedule scenario – Job is put on hold – Migration report will indicate such jobs Feature Name 70 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Conversion steps • Algorithm stops conversion at the earliest successful step • Steps – Try create a daily schedule with 1 day repeat interval • Try promote to hourly schedule with hours / minutes interval – Try create a daily schedule with weekday based interval (Mon through Fri) – Try create a weekly schedule with ‘n’ week repeat interval – Try create a monthly schedule with • Specific day of month (e. g. 18 th of month) • Specific day of specific week for the month (e. g. third Sunday of last week) • Possible only if user has selected only 1 day of week or month in SIG schedule Feature Name 71 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Conversion steps (continued…) – Create a daily schedule with repeat interval set to least of • Repeat interval for original daily schedule • Average interval in days for weekly pattern • Average interval in days for days of month pattern – If none of above is possible, try create pattern from specific include dates – Last option is to patch up default schedule Feature Name 72 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified daily schedule (1 day repeat) • SIG daily schedule with 1 day repeat interval, or • SIG recurring weekdays schedule with all days selected, or • SIG recurring monthly schedule with all days selected Generate daily schedule with 1 day repeat interval SIG daily schedule OR SIG recurring weekdays schedule Feature Name OR SIG recurring days of month schedule 73 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified hourly schedule • Promote to hourly schedule if – SIG Time window is 24 hours long, and – Original availability window, if defined, is 24 hours long, and – Restart interval is present Promote the daily 1 day schedule to hourly schedule with repeat interval set to SIG restart interval • Every day and all 24 hours of day continuous timespan – Necessary condition for generating new hourly schedule by overlaying SIG repeat interval Feature Name 74 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Conversion of SIG recurring week days option • Accumulate pattern of selected days over five weeks – Active week – one with at least one day selected • Ignore a week for which no day is selected (inactive week) • Accumulated pattern of days pattern for new schedule • Minimum gap between active weeks repeat interval for new weekly schedule • Accumulated pattern – Mon Thru Fri and repeat interval of 1 new daily week day based schedule – At least one day selected new weekly schedule – Empty (means random pattern) candidate for creating a daily schedule Feature Name 75 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified weekday based daily schedule – 1 1 week Resultant interval = 1 week (Implicit in the daily weekday based schedule) 1 week Resultant weekdays = Mon through Fri Feature Name 76 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified weekday based daily schedule – 2 2 weeks 1 week Resultant interval = 1 week 2 weeks (Min of all weekly intervals) Resultant weekdays = Mon through Fri Feature Name Note: 3 rd and last week which have no weekdays selected have been ignored 77 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified weekly schedule – 1 3 weeks Resultant interval = 2 weeks (Min of all weekly intervals) Resultant weekdays = Mon through Fri Feature Name Note: · 1 st, 3 rd and last week which have no weekdays selected have been ignored · Repeat interval > 1 so cannot create weekday based daily schedule 78 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified weekly schedule – 2 1 week Resultant interval = 1 weeks 1 week Resultant weekdays = Mon, Wed and Fri Feature Name Note: · Mon, Wed, Fri every 1 week gives evenly distributed recurrences. · Another possible conversion but not favored – Sun through Sat every two weeks – which gives uneven recurrences i. e. daily recurrence every alternate week and no recurrence in other weeks. 79 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
SIG Weekly schedule simplified daily schedule • All weeks cancel each other No standing pattern • Only option is reduction to daily schedule with repeat interval calculated as weighted average of intervals between consecutive days of week 3 days 2 days In this example, Eleven 3 -day intervals One 2 -day interval potential to create a daily schedule with 3 -day repeat interval Feature Name 80 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Simplified monthly schedule Feature Name Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
SIG monthly schedule simplified daily schedule • New schedules do not support multiple days of a month • Only option is reduction to daily schedule with repeat interval calculated as – Highest frequency interval between consecutive days of month – In case of multiple such intervals, weighted average of all intervals In this example, Two 10 -day intervals One 11 -day interval potential to create a daily schedule with 10 -day repeat interval Feature Name 82 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
SIG Specific include dates • New schedules do not support specific includes • Ignored if any other SIG scheduling option has been configured • Only option is reduction to daily schedule with repeat interval calculated as – Highest frequency Interval between consecutive specific dates – In case of multiple such intervals, weighted average of all intervals Feature Name 83 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Availability and SIG schedule window • Intersection of SIG schedule window and availability window – If availability window is defined on original selection list and, – At least one of the two windows is shorter than 24 hours in length • Intersection logic same as that in pre-Honshu BEServer • Start time of intersection result becomes start time of upgraded schedule • End time of intersection result expressed as relative duration from start time and is used as schedule window length in new schedule Feature Name 84 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Auto-cancel duration • Pre-Honshu, it was relative to actual start time • In Honshu, it is relative to scheduled start time and cannot be shorter than schedule window • Migrated auto-cancel window length = migrated schedule window + pre-Honshu auto-cancel duration • E. g. pre-Honshu schedule window of 7: 00 pm to 10: 59 pm and auto-cancel duration of 1 hour – Job starts at 7 pm will be auto-cancelled at 8 pm – Job starts at 10: 59 pm will be auto-cancelled at 11: 59 pm (note this is beyond end of schedule window) Job can run till 10: 59 pm + 1 hour = 11: 59 pm In above case the Cancel window will be calculated as 5 hrs Feature Name 85 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Dates / DST • Later of availability window start date and the SIG schedule effective date is considered as start date for migrated schedule • SIG anchor date – Honored during migration if SIG schedule contained only daily scheduling option – In such case later of anchor date, effective date and availability start date (if configured) is considered as start date for migrated schedule • DST – During migration, all dates are converted to local time zone which removes any DST artifacts – [Note: This is not recurrence computation] Feature Name 86 Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only
Notification Upgrade Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 87
Notification Upgrade • All existing recipients are migrated and will exist after upgrade. • Configurations for PAGER, PRINTER, VIM , MAPI will be deleted, SMTP configuration settings will be retain if configured. • All association between a Job/Alert/Report and any recipient will be kept intact. Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 88
Notification Upgrade… • Pre Honshu we can divide recipient in 2 types , “Mail type”, and “non-mail type” , SMTP, MAPI, VIM are mail type. Rest are nonmail type ( for example “net send” have IP address, “printer” have printer address etc). • During Migration, all “Mail type” recipients will be migrated seamlessly, because we have the destination mail address. Backup Exec 2012 (GOLD) - Simplified Scheduler Symantec Confidential: Internal Use Only 89
Notification Upgrade… • For “Non-Mail type” recipients, recipient details like “recipient name”, “unique recipient ID”, “association of recipient with “Job/Alert/Report” and member ship of recipient in group will be retained. • For “Non-Mail type” recipient s, BE Administrator will have to configure Destination email address ( One time job ). once done the newly configured email address will start getting all the email’s for all Job/Alert/Report which were configured for this recipient pre-Honshu.
