Design Metaphor Background Design Concept Gallery “Computer Chip and Motherboard” metaphor Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions • Symbolizes knowledge and information • Represented by glowing objects and strategically placed luminaires • The idea of organization and structure represents the coming together of knowledge

Project Design Goals Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions • To provide a non-cluttered and clean look • To highlight and attract attention to architectural elements • To provide an energy efficient design • To maintain design metaphor throughout all the spaces

Project Design Criteria Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) • To satisfy minimum illuminance levels recommended by the IESNA • Lighting power density must be at or lower than the ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90. 1 ~ 1999 Meeting Room Conclusions • Other design issues to consider – Glare – Illuminance distribution – Color appearance

Background Direct System Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions Indirect System

Design comparison Background Design Concept Direct System Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Indirect System Conclusions Power density of both system exceeds the allowable amount (1. 6 W/ft 2), however this can be corrected with the correct lighting control system

Power density of the lecture/note-taking lighting scene Background Direct System Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Indirect System Power density OK Conclusions Power density of System #1 (Direct) is lower than that of System #2 (Indirect)

Result of comparison analysis Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions Therefore, Pick System #1 (Direct System) (movie not available in electronic format of presentation. Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions Acoustics Analysis of Lecture Hall

Reverberation Time Analysis Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions • The range of reverberation time for a lecture room at 500 Hz is from 0. 7 to 1. 1 • If the reverberation time is longer than the optimum value ~ room will sound too lively and boomy • If the reverberation time is shorter than the optimum value ~ room will sound dead and flat

New and old reverberation time comparison Background Design Concept Gallery Lecture Hall (acoustics) Meeting Room Conclusions Therefore, reverberation time OK
