AXREM EMERGENCY STOP button label recommendations Electrical installations
AXREM EMERGENCY STOP button label recommendations Electrical installations of medical imaging equipment often include additional red mushroom STOP buttons that are not part of the supplied medical equipment, but form part of the electrical installation (specified and installed as part of the enabling works). To meet the requirements of HTM 06 -01 (15. 62) and provide a consistent approach across all vendors a standardised marking has been agreed by all AXREM members. It is possible that a room may contain more than one image system and each may have there own external STOP button. Without clear identification it could lead to the wrong system being shut down in an emergency. It is also possible for two STOP buttons to be present but they have a different function. For example one may remove the mains power from the system while the other only stops the motorised movements of the system. For example, both may have the same effect when operated due to uncontrolled motion occurring, but using the power off button may result in loss of patient data and required functions (e. g. ability to produce X-rays or be able to see ECG waveforms on a monitor). Operating these buttons could have additional functions (e. g. a motion stop may also terminate radiation), or may allow some energy to remain, such as via a UPS (uninterruptable power supply). Therefore, in these cases the end user should be issued with a one page instruction guide. This should indicate the function of all the additional STOP buttons fitted as part of the electrical installation, which therefore may not be included in the standard manufacturers operator manuals. A diagram may be helpful in identifying affected components. The following is the AXREM recommendations for the marking these controls: • The stop button hand symbol must be an ISO 7010 E 020 image in green as the standard dictates. • The font should be Arial Bold, 32 point minimum size, with all capitals. • The size of the signs should be 50 mm high by 150 mm width, 75 mm x 225 mm, or 100 mm x 300 mm maximum. • The sign should be made from ridged plastic or metal and be more than 1 mm thick (3 mm suggested). The sign thickness allows wall paining once mounted to the wall without affecting the sign. • The sign should have a self-adhesive backing and allow wipe cleaning.
