AWG Proxy Data at CIMSS has several years of experience generating proxy data sets for a large number of AWG team members and other groups. Outline • Procedure for generating ABI proxy data • Description of solar and IR forward models • Data sets available • Groups using CIMSS proxy data • Future datasets 1
AWG Proxy Data at CIMSS Proxy Dataset Generation Steps: • Perform WRF model simulation covering a large geographic domain with high spatial and temporal resolution • Convert model-simulated data into the correct format for ingest into the CIMSS Forward Model System (CFMS) • Simulated fields used by the forward model include T, qv, Tskin, 10 -m wind speed, and the mixing ratios and effective diameters for 5 hydrometeor species (cloud water, rain water, ice, snow, and graupel) • All 3 -d model fields remain on the model’s sigma coordinate system • Generate simulated ABI radiances using the CFMS • Remap the simulated radiances from the model grid points to a representative ABI projection 2
AWG Proxy Data at CIMSS Forward Model System: http: //cimss. ssec. wisc. edu/goes_r/awg/proxy/forward_model/ • Solar RT model – Gas absorption (lookup table, f(p, T, )); attenuation of direct solar beam & diffuse radiation is assumed the same – Cloud absorption/scattering properties • Ice: Baum et al. (2005); LUTs • Liquid: Mie LUTs – Surface albedo • Land: Gap-filled 2 km MODIS white-sky albedo products (working on new 1 km BRDF products that include snow cover) • Water: Sea surface reflectance model (Sayer 2007) - problems – Rayleigh scatter included (Bodhaine et al. 1999) – Aerosols not included – RT solver: Solar SOI model (Chris O’Dell); 8 streams for ABI bands 1 -7 3
AWG Proxy Data at CIMSS • Infrared RT model – Gas absorption (CRTM Compact-OPTRAN) – Cloud absorption/scattering properties • Ice: Baum et al. (2005); LUTs • Liquid: Mie LUTs – Surface emissivity • Land: Monthly mean high resolution IR surface emissivity database (Seeman et al. 2008); 0. 05 o grid • Water: CRTM IRSSEM – Aerosols (in progress) – RT solver: SOI model (Heidinger et al. 2006); uses 2 or 4 streams depending on degree of scattering 4
