What is AVID? Advancement Via Individual Determination � The AVID College Readiness System, including the AVID elective and school-wide strategies, works to ensure students are college-ready by equipping them with the skills, academic behaviors, and college knowledge necessary to succeed at every level from elementary school to college. � Established more than 35 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts more than 1. 2 million students in 44 states and 16 other countries/territories. Goals for Students and Families 2016 -217 �Increase more students taking advanced courses including AP, Honors, and Dual-Enrollment (MOWR), when appropriate. �Increase opportunities for parental involvement. �Discover ways to increase funding for the AVID program, including fund raisers and grants.

Advanced Courses � Kell offers AP and Honors courses in every major subject area. � Students who decide to take AP courses also need to commit to taking the AP exams as well. � MOWR / early graduation can be effective, but may prevent students from taking the AVID elective, so it is important to formulate a plan well ahead of time.
Family Involvement Goals � Strengthen the connection between home and the AVID program. � Additional opportunities to support the program, including chaperoning field trips. � Have current Kell AVID parents plan and attend a meeting or event for rising 9 th grade AVID parents, especially students selected from Mc. Clesky.

Promotion Requirements � 9 th to 10 th Grade: � 5 units (1 credits each in required or core Lit, Math, Science) � 10 th to 11 th Grade: � 10 units (2 credits each in required or core Lit, Math, Science) � 11 th to 12 th Grade: � 16 units and have met all other promotion requirements � 23 Required Credits � EOCs count as 20% in certain courses � Students must pass all classes required for graduation
Graduation vs. Admissions Requirements Graduation (minimum) Admissions (above & beyond) � Determined by GA Department of Ed (DOE) � Determined by the individual college � Tracked by students, teachers, and your school counselor � Tracked by students/parents – it is your responsibility to find out what the school wants � Are needed before students earn a diploma – students graduate if they earn the minimum � Are needed before you can be accepted – students may not be accepted with just the minimum requirements. � Include 23 required credits � Include SAT or ACT or COMPASS

HOPE Rigor Requirements � For the Graduating Class of 2017 and beyond, a student meeting the requirements to be a HOPE Scholar at the time of high school graduation must earn a minimum of four full credits from the academic rigor course categories listed below prior to graduating from high school. Scholarship Grant � 3. 0 Core GPA Needed (can be earned in college) � No initial GPA requirement � Two year or four year degree � Must graduate from a GA high school � Must be a GA resident for at least one year (Green Card or citizenship) � Covers a percentage of tuition � Technical certificate or diploma � Must have a high school diploma or GED � Must be a GA resident for at least one year (Green Card or citizenship) � Covers a percentage of tuition Apply for HOPE through FAFSA or GSF Apps after January 1 of your senior year.
Zell Miller Program Zell Miller Scholarship � Requires 3. 7 Core High School GPA � Requires 1200 SAT Math and Reading/Verbal or 26 ACT � Pays for two year or four year degree � Must graduate from a Georgia High School � Must be GA Resident for at least one year (Green Card or citizenship) � Covers full tuition � Applies automatically for Valedictorian or Salutatorian � Must maintain 3. 5 college GPA Zell Miller Grant � Requires 3. 5 College GPA for grant eligibility � Does not require minimum test score � Pays for certificate, diploma or two year degree � Must graduate from a Georgia High School � Must be GA Resident for at least one year (Green Card or citizenship) � Covers full tuition (retroactively covers previous semester once 3. 5 GPA is earned) � Must maintain 3. 5 college GPA
