ACTION PACKED SCENARIO - NARR I. • Generally only five to eight cars are loaded in a single string. • A portable ramp is rolled up to the end of the string. • At some auto facilities, there are fixed ramps at the ends of tracks (but this is less common). • The ramp levels are either fixed (for tri-levels or bilevels) or can be adjusted hydraulically. • the doors are opened and folding deck plates are laid down between the cars. 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 7
ACTION PACKED SCENARIO NARR II. • Then a highly paid skilled driver with nerves strung like a piano wire runs to the auto, • starts it, • revves the gas several times to make sure the tachometer can go past the red line, • races around to the ramp, • zooms up it, • drives to the far end in the string • brakes to a halt in a cloud of smoke, • wiggles out the end door, • runs back to the car park 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 8
ACTION PACKED SCENARIO III. • to start again, • narrowly escaping being flattened by the former open-wheel champion in the next car. • Another crew, or sometimes the same as the driver, - uses tie down straps or chocks to lash the auto to the deck. 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 9
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. Early 20 th century in boxcars: - Two to four automobiles ii. Susequent modifications : - longer boxcars, -larger sliding double side doors at one end, -doors located on the boxcar ends. 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 10
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. In 1923, the Grand Trunk Western Railroad: - 61 -foot (18. 59 m)-long wood-frame flat cars -collapsible frames for double-deck operation ii. In 1940 s to 1950 s: -some railroads developed automobile-loading assemblies - to lift one or more automobiles above other in a boxcar 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 11
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. In U. S. , most Circuses traveled by rail ii. Circuses were major haulers of wheeled vehicles: - on flat cars - usually behind their own passenger cars iii. Usually, one train for people - A second train for vehicles / freight iv. The Circus solution to loading vehicles: -used a string of flatcars. - a temp ramp at the end of the flatcars - temp bridge plates over the gaps bet flatcars v. Vehicles were driven or towed up onto one car and then over the train v. This became known as “Circus Style" loading 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 12
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. Autorack and flat car length quickly grew to - 87 feet (26. 52 m) - 89 feet (27. 13 m) - equal to then average railroad passenger car ii. Longer cars ? - interchange service problem due to clearance on curves iii. Yet, U. S. Railroads could still do better -( way back)! 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 13
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS i. A major problem: - protection from theft, vandalism, severe weather ii. Individual railroads began installing: - mesh side screen / solid panels late 1960 s -early 1970 s new racks built with side panels. iii. Vandals could still gain access to the automobiles iv. In 1973 , the first fully enclosed racks with continuous side panels, end doors, and roofs were developed. - But not all Autoracks until mid -1980 s -Bridges and Tunnel clearances? -Modified progressively 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 14
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS • Whitehead & Kales, Ford, N&W and DT&I jointly developed prototype Tri-Level car: - Completely enclosed -Car side made up of overlapping perforated steel sheets -Ends protected with two Trifold doors, -A corrugated steel roof extending full length of car 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 15
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS • Currently autoracks produced by: - Trinity. Rail, -Greenbrier, -Johnstown America, - National Steel Car, - Union Pacific Railroad • ( Scope for Collaboration exists- in India) 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 16
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS Vert-A-Pac • Both railroads and automakers wanted reduced shipping costs • Increase the number of vehicles per rail car • In 1968 GM and the Southern Pacific Railroad jointly developed: -to carry the Chevrolet Vega( a new compact car of GM) - a radical new rail car; "Vert-A-Pac", - Holds 30 Vegas in vertical, nose-down position ; Vs 18 in tri-level autoracks. • Design didn’t survive. 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 17

Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS • • Stac-Pac Another joint General Motors-Southern Pacific automobile rail car -Stac-Pac. Designed to carry 12 high end Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac models in four removable fully enclosed tri-level containers on 89 -foot flat car. First production entered service in 1971. Withdrawn from service at - end of the 1976 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 19
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS • • • Trailer Train Company (TTX) ( Business Strategy) Although advantageous , in the 1960 s, most North American railroads were reluctant to invest in specially built equipment. The Trailer Train Company, (Pennsylvania Railroad and the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1955) stepped in to ease the railroads' financial burden a bit. Trailer Train purchased the flat cars from the rail car manufacturers, Railroads purchased the racks Racks were installed flat cars and operated by Railroads 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 20
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS Ensuing Success • This arrangement worked so well that nearly every autorack operating in the US was owned by a railroad. • Trailer Train became TTX Company in 1991; • Since then many railroads have themselves purchased the flat cars on which the racks were installed • TTX expanded into purchasing and leasing out other railroad rolling stock. • The development of enclosed autoracks also helped make several other innovative services work well. 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 21
Autorack – HISTORY & INNOVATIONS • Trailer Train / TTX reporting marks applied to autorack flats: • BTTX (1) - 85 ft to 89 ft bilevel rack with fixed decks; used from 1960 to 1988 • BTTX (2) - fully enclosed articulated bilevel with fixed decks, • CTTX (2) - 89 ft enclosed but roofless trilevel for use on low overhead clearance routes; used from 1976 onward • CTTX (3) - 89 -4 fully enclosed convertible bilevel/trilevel with hinged middle deck; used from 2013 onward 24 -09 -2016 AUTORACKS- POSSIBILITIES IN INDIA 22
