So What Happens During This Stage of Development? ◦ Toilet Training plays a big role ◦ Learning to control one’s body function leads to a feeling of control and a sense of independence ◦ Gaining more control over food choices ◦ Toy preference ◦ Clothing selection ◦ Feel the need to do things independently
Continue… ◦ Children who successfully complete this stage feel secure and confident, while those who do not are left with a sense of inadequacy and self-doubt a sense of shame. ◦ Erikson states it is critical that parents allow their children to explore the limits of their abilities within an encouraging environment which is tolerant of failure. ◦ Parents must try not to do everything for their children but if the child fails at a particular task they must NOT criticize the child for failures and accident.
