Full Face Shield / Goggles Hood Clothing—Chemical Protection Gloves—Chemical Personal Fall Protection References / Documents Respirator / Filter Mask Supplied Air q ASTM D 36 Other: Equipment q Ring, Brass (Part #V 048101) q Ball Centering Guide (Part #Q 048006) q Temperature Probe (Part #L 00140) Materials and Reagents q Ball, Steel (Part #V 048105) q Ring and Ball Holder (Part #V 048100) q Pouring Plate – flat, smooth, brass plate q USP Glycerin q Stir Bar Special Instructions q ISL Beaker (Part #M 00413) q Silicon Grease Environmental Automated Softening Point Measurement Using ISL RB 36 1 Lightly grease brass pouring plate with silicon grease to prevent sticking. 2 Place ring on pouring plate. 3 Pour a slight excess of heated sample into ring and allow to cool for 30 minutes. 4 Fill beaker to mark with glycerin. 5 Remove any excess sample from outer portion of ring with knife or razor and flatten top of sample so that flush with ring. 6 Place ring with sample in appropriate hole in ring and ball holder. 7 Referring to picture below, place ball centering guide on top of ring (ensure sits flush on holder oriented such that guide pins not touching ring). 8 Place ball in center of ball centering guide. 9 Place ring and ball holder in the beaker filled with glycerin. 10 Set the temperature probe in place (through center hole on top plate of holder assembly). 11 Install the beaker on the heating stand. 12 Select the bath type using the L/Q key. To enter a sample number: a. Depress the (N) key – a number will display. b. Enter new number (1 – 6 figures) using keypad – display will blink. c. Depress the (ENT) key to validate. 14 Start stirrer by depressing “-O-” key. 15 Start test by depressing ON key. 16 Test will end when ball drop is detected – an audible alarm will sound and display will blink. 17 Press “ALA” key to silence alarm. IMPORTANT: At test end, “ALA” key must be depressed to store data. If “OFF” key is pressed to silence alarm, data will be lost and will not be retrievable. 18 Record temperature reading from display screen. 19 Clean test components with toluene while still warm.
