Author’s Tone & Purpose

Tone is the author’s attitude or feeling towards the subject of his/her writing. Identify the author’s tone by examining the types of words the author uses within the text.

Must I recycle everything? I don’t want anymore gifts of brown “earth friendly” stationary. I want to exercise my right to burn my trash and throw my potato chip bag in the trash.

This place may be shabby, but since both of my children were born while we lived here, it has a special place in my heart.

Some professors expect students to understand material that they have never even addressed in class! Many students are unclear about what information is important for this reason. When it is time for tests the students don’t know what to study and how could they, unless they were mind readers? If professors expect good grades from students they must adequately prepare them.
