AUTHOR’S PURPOSE • The AUTHOR’S PURPOSE for writing any piece of literature is the reason the author created that particular piece. • Author’s write for many different reasons. There is not just one purpose that motivates people to write. We are going to discuss the six main types of author’s purpose and learn the significance of each type.

Most fiction stories, plays, and comedies are written for entertainment. 2. to explain: the author writes for the reader to have an idea of how something works. Directions that you receive with a new product and how-to’s are the most frequently used type of explainations.

Political campaigns, tv commercials, adds in newspapers, magazines, billboards. 4. to retell: an author does a retelling of a piece of literature from someone else. This is not an original work. The big bad wolf’s version of the 3 Little Pigs, the play version of Anne Frank, a screenplay from any novel.

Dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas, encyclopedia, most textbooks are examples of factual information. 6. to criticize: the author makes their opinion known about a particular subject. It can be positive or negative. Movie reviews, newspaper editorials, book reviews, school papers are all examples

AUTHOR’S PURPOSE • It is important to know the author’s purpose so that we can have a better understanding of why the author chose to write about their subject. When we have a better understanding about author’s purpose, it helps us with theme, main idea, and point of view.
