Authors usually write to persuade, inform, or entertain.
Persuade: to cause someone to do something through reasoning or argument Did the author try to change your mind? Did the author try to make you do or believe something? What are some examples of persuasive text/videos? Possible features: pros and cons, argument, passion, and/or Rhetorical questions
Inform: to give someone facts or information Did the author try to share information with you? Did you learn something new, or a new way to do something? What are some examples of informative text/videos? Possible features: facts, statistics, and/or definitions
Entertain: to provide someone with amusement or enjoyment Did the author try to make you laugh, cry, feel good? Did the author try to get you to relax and enjoy the story? What are some examples of entertaining texts/videos? Possible features: characters, plot, setting
Is it important for us to know the author’s purpose before we start reading? Do you read your social studies book the same way you read The Watson’s Go to Birmingham? Do you read the instructions to a game differently than you read a comic book? Do you read an article about sharks differently than you read a cook book? Why?
