§ Authority is exercised by making decisions and seeing that they are carried out. § Through authority the executive comes in a position Features where they can regulate the behaviour of their subordinates. § Here the right of giving order is legitimate. § The use of authority is determined by the personality of the person.
§ Formal authority theory- this theory states that the ultimate source of authority lies in the constitution. Sources of authority § Acceptance theory- this theory states that authority depends on the acceptance of the people who have to comply with it. Hence an administrator has authority to the extent that the subordinates accept it. § Competence theory- this theory states that authority is general by personal competence of an individual.
§ Traditional authority- Weber states that in this type of authority the leader has the authority by virtue of the status he has inherited. Here the ruler is obeyed because of certain traditions. § Charismatic Authority- this type of authority is based on Authority: Max Weber the personal qualities of a leader. People obey the leader because of extraordinary abilities. § Legal authority- this form of authority is exercised through a system of rules and procedures. Here the bureaucracy is the focus of the administrative system.
§ Biological limiration- a manager cannot ask a subordinate to do something which he himself cannot do. For example climbing a wall. § Physical limitation- physical aspects such as climate and Limits of authority geographical factors limit authority. § Legal limitations- a manager has to exercise his authority within the bounds of various laws passed. § Social constraints- social factors impose restrictions on authority. For example employees must conform to a groups beliefs and codes.
