BEHAVIOR v Cryptobiosis: The ability to dehydrate and slow down metabolic rate in extreme temperatures and during desiccation (drying out). Caused when the tardigrade is under extreme stress. v For hunting prey they use eyespots to spot food, then they dart in the direction of the prey. Using it syphon like mouth to slurp their prey up whole. More info on cryptobiosis- the environment is what triggers a tardigrade to go into cryptobiosis or desiccation. v /20150313 ry to /s h rt a /e m co c. b. b http: //www -on-earth -the-toughest-animals

Similarities v All tardigrades need water nearby to preform gas exchange and prevent desiccation

Similarities v All tardigrades need water nearby to preform gas exchange and prevent desiccation v Cryptobiosis v All are 1 mm in size v Have 8 legs https: //serc. carleton. edu/microbelife/topics/ tardigrade/index. html

Differences v There aquatic and terrestrial tardigrades v Among aquatic Tardigrades there are fresh

Differences v There aquatic and terrestrial tardigrades v Among aquatic Tardigrades there are fresh water and salt water (10% Marine and 90 % freshwater) v They are effected by their environment, it can effect what their more resilient to (trophic-extreme heat, Artic or Antarctic- extreme cold) Marine Tardigrades go through a process called cylomorphsis- a seasonal hibernation. The water in the winter caused the tardigrade to freeze up. As the waters warm in the summer, that triggers the tardigrade to wake up. This is also the process of sexual maturity. v https: //sites. google. com/site/tardigradeportf olio/behavior
