What we will cover this morning • What authentic leadership is and is not • Barriers to displaying authentic leadership • Discovering your authentic leadership • Can you be authentically agile?
What does authentic leadership look like for you?
What authentic leadership is not • Imitating someone else • No excuse for bad behaviour
What authentic leadership is • • Being self aware Consistently practicing your values and principles Balancing your focus on intrinsic and extrinsic motivators Leading with your heart as well as your head Establishing long-term and meaningful relationships Empowering people to lead Having the self discipline to achieve results Leading a balanced and integrated life
Barriers to displaying authentic leadership • ‘This is who I am. This is what I do’ • Lack of self awareness – Limited awareness of strengths and development areas – Not recognising impact on others – Poorly defined leadership ‘brand’ • • More intuitive than planned leadership practice ‘One size fits all’ More task than people focused (or vice versa) Overplaying a strength so it becomes a weakness
What is your leadership ‘brand’? • What words would others use to describe your leadership (i. e. what are you known for)? • Why would people want to come to work and be lead by you? • What is your leadership purpose or value proposition? • What are you really good at when leading people? • What do you want your leadership legacy to be? • How has your leadership changed over time?
