Australia Geoscience Vocabularies
Northern Territory Queensland Western Australia South Australia New South Wales Victoria • “only” 8 government geological surveys Tasmania Geoscience Australia
Australian Chief Government Geologists Committee (CGGC) Government Geoscience Information Committee (GGIC, formerly GGIPAC) • Representatives from all State, Territory and Commonwealth government geoscience agencies and New Zealand Work focus on: • Geoscience-related information standards and data models • Data access and delivery solutions
Australian Stratigraphic Names • Central register commenced in 1949 at the Bureau of Mineral Resources (now Geoscience Australia) as a card file • In collaboration with State geological surveys, universities and AJES • Australian Stratigraphic Units Database digitised in 1979 • Records ~48, 000 geological units • ~15, 700 current valid units
Australian Stratigraphic Names Currently deliverd as HTML web application Long term plan to develop a web service using the Geo. Sci. ML standard
International Timescale - GA, Australian Journal of Earth Sciences have adopted international spelling - Temora U-Pb zircon standard - better Paleozoic definition - Australian stages - not simple correlations Cainozoic Late Early Archaean Bolindian Eastonian Gisbornian Palaeozoic
Australian National Geology Data Model and vocabularies • 2002 - preliminary conceptual National Geological Data Model - prompted by early work by NSW • 2004 - GGIC meeting and a first edition data model published - included 29 proposed vocabularies (MS Excel spreadsheets) - GGIC began engagement with and input to Geo. Sci. ML • 2006 - decision to pursue Geo. Sci. ML as the Australian data standard - meeting of all Australian geological surveys to compile a co-ordinated contribution to CGI vocabularies - submitted 30 proposed vocabularies to CGI Concept Definitions group
2006 - Australian submission to CGI vocabularies Bedding pattern Bedding thickness Bedding style Body morphology Colour Composition part Consolidation Contact character Contact type Event environment Event process Fabrics, textures Gross composition Metamorphic grade Movement sense Movement type Observation methods Outcrop character Particle geometry Physical property Positional accuracy Proportion Stratigraphic rank Relationship roles Thematic accuracy Unit part roles Value qualifier Weathering character
Strategy for vocabulary development in Australia - coordinated by GGIC vocabularies working group - each new vocabulary requires a champion - normally a geological survey with a particular requirement - to start with, keep it simple to encourage engagement from many people - Excel spredsheets - simple parent hierarchy if possible - initially, avoid more complex ontology software packages until content is more mature
GGIC relationship with CGI (Geo. Sci. ML) Concept Definitions working group 1. GGIC submits new vocabularies to the CGI Concept Definitions group 2. coordinates Australian reviews of vocabularies published by the CGI Concept Definitions group
Earth Resources Data Model - mineral occurrences, mines • 2004 - preliminary modelling by GGIC and CSIRO • 2006 -7 - model extended by Victoria - all Australian geological surveys meet to revise the Victorian model – version 1 released - agreement on some supporting vocabularies • 2008 -9 - model updated – version 1. 1 • 2010 - version 2 in progress - 11 vocabularies to support the model are currently under review by GGIC
Earth Resources vocabularies • Commodity name • Commodity group • Mineral deposit type, group • Mineral system type • Earth resource expression, form, shape • Supergene processes • Extraction methods • Minerals
Au. Scope Vocabulary Service • web service delivery of standard vocabularies • mineral commodities • units of measure - UCUM
