Aufwӓrmung 1. Take a card from me. It indicates your present state of mind. 2. Take out your homework and leave it on your desks. I will come by and check for it. 3. Go up to 5 classmates. Greet them (in German!). Ask each of them (IN GERMAN!) how they are doing. They will answer, using the word on their card. 4. They will then ask you how YOU are doing. German uses 4 other letters as well. You may or may not choose to use them, as there have substitutes for each of them.
Äӓ = ay/eh, depending on how you use it. Pretty much the same as German ‘e: ’ head/Gӓste • the dots over the letters are called an “Umlaut. ” • They indicate a change in the sound of the vowel. • If you don’t want to write your words with an Umlaut, simply write an ‘e’ after the letter. • Beispiel: Gӓste = Gaeste
Beispiele: 1. Äpfel 2. Maedchen 3. Kӓfer 4. Baer
Öö = uh/eu, similar to Blur/hören This sound is closer to French than it is to English
Üü = a vowel sound we don’t have in English! It is closest to a combination of the sounds “ee” and “ew”
Beispiele: 1. Tür 2. Kueche 3. hübsch 4. luegen
Das “Ess-tsett” Is the name of this curious creation: ß • It makes the same sound as “ss. ” The 2 are often interchangeable (more on this later) • dreißig/dreissig • beissen/beißen
