ATTACHMENT C Chesterfield County Public Schools Bellwood Elementary Year-Round School Proposal Dr. James Lane, Superintendent April 26, 2018 Virginia Board of Education presentation
Overview • Academic Needs and Considerations - Staff researched year-round school concept due to these concerns • Summer learning loss • Student health and well-being • Lack of opportunities for new experiences - Need buy-in from staff members, parents and community - Schools with high free/reduced lunch rates and English learner population
YRS Site Visit Observations Wake County, NC and Alexandria, VA – Frequent breaks resulted in reduced incidences of burnout for students and teachers – Fewer discipline and behavior problems reported – Fewer retentions (more remediation chances) – Effective teacher planning (workday per intersession) – Additional income for staff members (working during intersession or substituting) – Increased student access to meals
Research: Financial needs • Projected additional cost: $175, 000 – Covers supplemental services during intersession • 12 -month contract for assistant principal and registrar • Non-contractual payment to instructional staff • Transportation • Intersession supplemental services paid initially through competitive grants – 21 st Century Community Learning Centers and VDOE Year-round Schools Implementation grants
