Reminders (2/3) … A multitude of things to be improved w. r. t. the current nominal or ATS optics, and monitored for the telescopic optics (see also the LMC discussions on options min/med/max) - Dispersion at TCP 90% lower in IR 3 for ATS (historical), to be restored. New ATS compatible IR 4 optics (for BSRT as implemented in 2015 in the so-called option med). BI, ADT and LBDS functionalities preserved during the telescopic squeeze. New IR 2/8 crossing scheme (larger sep. , pitch of X-plane, etc. ). New IR 2/8 optics (phase) to maximize squeeze-ability in standard mode (ions, p. Pb) IP 15 phase preserved w. r. t. to 2015 optics. MKD-TCT phase for both beams, both IR 1 & IR 5, both for the pre-squeezed and telescopic squeezed optics. - 26/02/2015 … S. Fartoukh, ATS Optics preparation and validation meeting 3

Objective Reminders (3/3) Gain confidence, build experience and fully validate for the HL-LHC (when appropriate and still possible, feed-forward onto the HL-LHC present HW baseline) Strategy o Short-term (2016 -2017): 1. Re-build an optimized ATS LHC optics version, at least equivalent to the nominal optics in terms of b* reach and all other functionalities 2. Validate it on paper 3. Organize dedicated MDs and obtain asap the green light for implementation in the LHC in 2017 (see 2016 LSWG day) o Medium-term & by-products (2017 -2020): 1. Identify the most promising telescopic collision optics to boost the LHC performance 26/02/2015(flat or round telescopic S. Fartoukh, ATS Optics preparation and validation meeting angle, MO <0, and other tricks) 4 optics with reduced Xssing

Main validation steps o Basic checks (strength limits, aperture, chromatic properties, . . ) Done in parallel with the optics construction (the dry run will identify the last remaining mistakes. . ) o Machine protection & collimation 1. Injection failure No need to recheck 2. Asynchronous dumps, . . Hopefully OK (? ) see Roderick talks 3. Cleaning efficiency (new spikes) somebody is needed to validate o DA with (existing) field imperfections Shall be OK (what could be done otherwise !? . . . ) o Beam-beam see Tatiana’s talk 1. DA in collision (pre-squeezed optics) with Q’, MO, etc. , compared to nominal 2. Full ATS for LHC: X-angle reduction relying on LR beam-beam compensation with MOs 26/02/2015 correct-ability (Q 5/6 S.
