Pollutants of Global Concern • Ozone Depletion In 1930 s CFCs were invented and used in many commercial applications since they have many desirable properties. (extremly stable, nontoxic, nonflammable) In 1974 Molina and Rowland argued that CFCs are stable in troposphere but not in stratosphere. In the stratosphere CFCs break down into free chlorine atoms which starts a catalytic destruction of O 3 molecules. Deacreasing in O 3 concentration then causes UV exposure in Earth’s surface.

Pollutants of Global Concern • Ozone Depletion In 1985 Molina and Rowland’s theory was proved by the observed lowest O 3 concentration measurements in the stratosphere over Antartica Such ozone depletion has likely already accounted for millions of skin cances and cataracts among humans… In 1987 46 countries manufacturing CFCs developed a treaty (Montreal Treaty) to reduce CFC production on a scheduled basis, and by 1989 39 countries had ratified it. Although no new production of CFCs, long live of CFCs and alternative of CFCs will be a concern for many years to come.

Concentration of Gas and Particles • Concentration can be expressed in terms of mass, volume or particle number of the concerned contaminant per unit volume of air • Particle mass concentration Cpm is the mass of the particles per unit volume of air usually in mg/m 3 • Particle number concentration Cpn is the number of particles per unit volume of air particles in m 3 or count/m 3 • Cpm and Cpn can be converted back and forth if the density and the size of the particles are known.

Concentration of Gas and Particles • Concentration of gaseous contaminant Cg is usually expressed in terms of part of gas of concern per million parts of air (ppm) • 1 ppm = 1 part of gas of concern/1, 000 parts of carring fluid • The ppm could be either in mass or volume concentration. Example • CO 2 concentration in the ground level atmosphere is 360 ppmv. What is the CO 2 concentration in ppmm and mg/m 3? The densities of air and CO 2 are 1. 2 and 1. 82 kg/m 3. • 360 ppmv = 360 cm 3 CO 2/1 m 3 air = 360 x 1. 82 x 10 -6 m 3/cm 3 / 1*1. 2 =546 x 10 -6 kg CO 2/kg air = 546 ppmm 360 ppmv =360 x 1. 82=655 mg/m 3 If densities were not given unit conversion to mg/m 3: Px 360 cm 3 CO 2 = m. Gas Flow Measurement • A fixed number of moles of gas at a certain temperature and pressure occupies a certain volume. If the P and T of this fixed number of moles of gas are changed, then the new volume can be easily calculated: • PV/T =n. R Since n is constant, • Pold. Vold/Told = Pnew. Example-1 • A sample stream of dry gas is being withdrawn from a stack. The stack gases are at 200 C and 730 mm Hg. The stream flows through a heated filter, a set of cooled impringers, a small air pump and then through a flow meter, as shown in Figure (Cooper alley p 36). The rate of flow is determined to be 30 L/min at 20 C and 790 mm Hg. Calculate the actual volumetric flow rate through the filter at T = 200 C and P = 730 mm Hg. • Qfilter = 30*(473/293)(790/730) = 52. 4 l/min • If a concentration of, say, 500 ppm NO 2 were measured in the gases exiting the flow meter then we could state that the concentration in the stack was also 500 ppm. Why?

Example-2 • The sampling train is empoyed a s in Example 1, except that the stack gases now have a significant water vapor content. Over a 15 minute sampling time 50 grams of water are condensed and collected in the impringers. The dry gas volumetric flow rate is measured as 30 l/min at 20 C and 790 mm Hg. An NO 2 concentration of 800 ppm is measured downstream of the flow meter. Calculate the NO 2 concentration in the stack, in which the humid gases are at T = 200 C and P = 730 mm Hg. Assume all the water is removed in the impringers.

Solution: • The molar flow rate of dry gas is: nd = (790)(30)/(62. 36)(293) = 1. 297 gmol/min The molar flow rate of water is: nw= (50 g /15 min)/(1 gmol/18 g)=0. 185 gmol/min And n. NO 2 = 800 (10)-6 x 1. 297 = 0. 001038 gmol/min The concentration of NO 2 in the stack gases is: CNO 2 = (106)0. 001038/(1. 297 +0. 185) = 700 ppm

Correction for O 2 content • Many emission standard includes the phrase “corrected to a% O 2” • Standard must be corrected for determined level of O 2 content to ensure that emission was not diluted by extra air input • Therefore emission concentration must both corrected to dry conditions and O 2 content (7% for EPA) Ccorr=the concentration corrected to 7% oxygen Cdscm=the concentration corrected to dry standard conditions Y= percent osygen in the flue gas, dry conditions

Example 1. 12 • A source must meet a standard for PM of 30 mg/dscm corrected to 7%O 2. An in situ stack gas monitor measures 22 mg/m 3 at stack conditions. The stack gas is at 1 atm and 200 C, and contains 12%moisture and 4% O 2 (note the measurement technique for oxygen automatically reports the O 2 at dry conditions. ) Is the source meeting the standard?
