B 0, short prototype coil ØCommon effort of CEA, INFN-LASA and CERN : ü to provide focus for the BT design --- to exercise all production steps ü to implement in BT production ü to exercise testing and to verify the design construction by CEA and LASA, test by CERN ØConstruction completed : ü delivered to CERN in Sep 00 ü last minute change of stops sliding interface (May 01) ü 1 st test campaign completed --- 2 nd test campaign started on 2 nd Oct 01 ØB 0 test result : ü vacuum vessel is tight (no repairs done) ü cooling down in 2 wks, all test station cryogenics works ü 20. 5 k. A achieved without quench in coil, so the coil design works ü cold leak in thermal shield circuit, stops sliding OK, tie rods OK ü 19 k. B 0, short prototype coil ØExamples of impact on BT construction : ü the early B 0 design brought collaborative spirit and focus to the magnet lab ü conductor: early qualification and testing ü improved conductor cleaning ü improvement to coil winding tolerances ü drastic improvement to impregnation (4 month extra work!) ü change of coil casing welding technique: EB->MIG ü cold mass integration: bladder technology and tooling ü cooling lines: less welds, line testing of whole circuits ü thermal shield: less welds, Al alloy, gap between panels ü tie rods: optimization: reshaping, testing ü stops: redesign, new sliding surfaces ü superinsulation: blanket layout and assembly ü instrumentation: change of sensors, thermalization etc. ü vacuum vessel assembly, use of frame ü cryostat integration: increase of clearance, procedures, many details of conductor bending, avoid turnovers, cooling pipe testing and gluing ü cryoring: conductor movements 10/22/2001 ATLAS RRB-T 2001 -119 5
Barrel Toroid Magnet Engineering & Monitoring @ CEA, INFN-LASA, CERN ØBT conductor (32 units x 1730 m) : ü 23 units done, on time for coil winding, not critical. ØCoil Casings (8 units): üwelding on CC-1 completed, machining started on 8 Oct 01 üfirst casing delivery by 18 Dec 01, last one ØDouble Pancakes (16 units) in Apr 03 ü 6 DPCs made, 5 accepted, #9 is being wound ü 5 m float w. r. t. coil casing, fine ! Barrel Toroid Magnet (2) ØVacuum vessels (8 units) : ØRadiation shield (8 SETS) : üdelivery 1 st vessel by FCM in Dec 01, üContract ok! 1 st delivery required by all steel procured. Not time critical ! April/02. Delivery is on the critical path! ØSuperinsulation (5000 m 2) : ØTi-Tie rods (64 units) : ü 1 st batch delivery in Mar 02 ü 64 rods forget, 6 machined. All Ti rods will be proof loaded at Kurchatov at 77 K ü 8 piece delivery by Mar 02 Ø 256 Stops + 128 shield sup. : Coils ütender completed, company selected contract under preparation, 1 st bat by Apr 02 ØIntegration inside the cryostat: üJNIR team at CERN, tooling under construction, delivery starts in Nov 01 ü Integration work starts in April 02 ØWarm support structure: üdesign review passed, TIS approval awaited in Oct 01 üforging work shall starts in Dec 01, large scale forging by Samara, all machining by JNIR 10/22/2001 ATLAS RRB-T 2001 -119 For installation in the ATLAS Pit 8

Engineering & Monitoring @ RAL, Nikhef ØVacuum vessels (2 units) : ü 1 st vessel ready, 2 nd vessel ready by March 02 ü 1 st vessel being transported to CERN right now. arrives on 29 Oct ØCold masses (2 units) ü full size dummy coil winding completed in Oct 00 at HMA ØSupports &Tie rods (64 units) : üproduction has started, 1 st batch delivery üserious problem with schedule and cost in Mar 02 increases caused by company taken over by FKI. üdelivery will be late in 03 and 04, not yet a problem for installation as it is scheduled for May 05. ØProximity cryogenics : ü design completed by RAL, tender in Feb 02 ØVacuum System : ü predesign completed by RAL, implementation studied ØMagnet Power System : ü final design and production of common system by LASA ØMagnet Safety and Control Systems : ü CERN is defining a common system with standardized hardware, will be built and installed by CERN ü tender completed, company selected 10/22/2001 ATLAS RRB-T 2001 -119 11
Solenoid ØSuccessful excitation test, Dec 00 {Toshiba} : ü Cooling down, excitation up to 8. 0 (nominal field) and 8. 4 k. A (+10%) ü 2 training quenches at both end flanges (classical) ü Results accepted by ATLAS, test completed ØDelivered to CERN on 3 rd Set , 2001 : ü Acceptance test done @CERN by KEK and Toshiba ü Solenoid provisional accepted 10/22/2001 ATLAS RRB-T 2001 -119 12
LAr Barrel Cryostat ØThe Barrel cryostat arrived at CERN : ü Cryostat was leak-tested at CERN ü A leak has been discovered on the warm bulkhead "A", in the region of the "bulge“ ü KHI, BNL and ATLAS agreed on the provisional acceptance with reserve on the flange A, where the source of the problem was identified ü KHI and BNL will take actions for the repair to be done by the end of February üThe cover can be repaired in parallel to the integration work without delay on the agreed integration schedule ØIntegration work has started : ü Cryostat fully opened Sept. 28 th ü First Signal Feedthrough in place Oct. 8 th ü Now 8 Feedthroughs are installed, welded and leak checked ü ~50% of all Feedthroughs are constructed 10/22/2001 ATLAS RRB-T 2001 -119 13

LAr Cryogenics Plant ØExternal cryogenics : üFirst liquid nitrogen dewar will be delivered end of October üThe 2 nd dewar and the 2 liquid argon storage tanks will be delivered June 2002 üStorage tanks in the pit in July 2003 üRefrigerator, ordered by BNL. The commissioning is planned in January 2004 üCryogenic lines, tendering procedure in progress ØProximity cryogenics : üExpansion vessels and valve boxes contracts signed. Delivery foreseen middle of 2002. Needed for the cold tests in 2003. üWork on flexible Ar lines and transport system under progress, prototyping done. üVacuum material delivery has started, diffusion pump already used for the barrel acceptance test. ØProcess control: üAgreement concerning the hardware, ready for signature.
