Student-Athlete Conduct/Expectations Excerpt from Student-Athlete Handbook regarding conduct on and off-campus Student-athletes are expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct/behavior throughout their time at Arcadia. Student-athletes are student leaders and ambassadors for the Department of Athletics. To this end, studentathletes are expected to: Exemplify high principles of honor, respect, integrity, and morality, and to help others fulfill their obligations under this code; Present themselves in an appropriate manner and, at all times, exhibit good taste, decency, and refrain from disorderly conduct or indecent, profane, or obscene expressions; Not engage in any actions or situations which recklessly or intentionally endangers mental or physical health or involves the forced consumption of liquor or drugs for the purpose of initiation onto an athletic team; Abide by university policies and the Student Code of Conduct.

Hazing From the Arcadia Student Handbook: “Hazing is a violation of University policy and Pennsylvania state law. Hazing includes, but is not limited to, behaviors occurring on or off campus that are physically, emotionally, or psychologically humiliating or abusive, or endanger the health or safety of an individual or selected group of individuals as part of the process of gaining entrance or acceptance into an established group, team, or organization. Any activity as described in this definition upon which the initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, or continued membership in an organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be ‘forced’ activity, the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding. Hazing includes, but is not limited to, subjecting an individual to extreme mental stress or encouraging or requiring willful destruction or removal of public or private property for the purpose of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition of continued membership in any organization. The term ‘hazing’ shall also include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug or other substance, or any other forced physical activity which could adversely affect the physical health and safety of the individual, and includes activities subjecting persons to extreme mental stress, including sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual. ”
Hazing Penalties/Sanctions Verbal or written warning; Assignment of verbal or written apology; Mandatory education; Counseling; Community service; Suspension from practice/competition or removal from the team; Termination of athletics eligibility; Cancellation of games and/or remainder of a season; Postseason ban; Team probationary status; Additional penalties imposed by Student Affairs for violations of the Student Code of Conduct; Additional penalties imposed by the sport head coach or athletics administrator; and Additional penalties imposed by the NCAA or MAC.
Sexual Harassment is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for employees and Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments for students. Whether it occurs in individual relationships or in the classroom, such behavior is unacceptable and violates university policy. Sexual harassment is defined as unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal and physical conduct of a sexual nature: When submission to such conduct is made a condition of an individual’s academic standing or employment; When submission or rejection of such conduct is used as a basis for decisions affecting an individual’s academic standing or employment; or Where such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individual’s performance on the job or in the classroom, or creating an intimidating, hostile, abusive, demeaning or offensive academic, living or working environment. Sports Wagering Arcadia does not condone sports wagering Wagering is considered giving up something for the chance to gain something Not allowed to bet on anything that the NCAA sponsors, including March Madness & Fantasy Football, whether it is amateur or professional Can’t bet on a sport even if you don’t play it If there is no entry fee and no prizes, it is okay
Social Media – The Good! Best Practices Obey all federal, state, and local laws; Respect copyright and fair use; Follow all social media site rules and terms of use; Adhere to policies/procedures set forth by the NCAA, MAC, and Arcadia Athletics; Refrain from posting materials that will reflect negatively on you, your teammates, the coaching staff, other student-athletes, the athletics department, and Arcadia; Privatize profiles & consider turning off location settings; Think twice before posting content & proofread all posts; Avoid topics that may be considered objectionable or inflammatory; and Avoid posting personal information (phone numbers, addresses, birth dates, schedules, etc. ) that can jeopardize your safety and result in either stalking or identify theft.
Social Media – The Bad! Ineffective Usage Posting offensive or inappropriate content; Commenting on or sharing objectionable posts, pictures, videos, and lyrics; Posting confidential, sensitive, or private information; Using profane language; Posting inappropriate comments, photos, or videos depicting team-related or university-identifiable activities; Taunting or making unsportsmanlike comments about students, student-athletes, coaches, spectators, and administrators at Arcadia University or other institutions; Posting content that is sexual in nature or that includes links to pornographic material; Making derogatory, demeaning, harassing, or threatening comments directed at an individual or entity; Posting content that violates NCAA, MAC, or Arcadia University rules or regulations; Promoting unacceptable, violent, or illegal activities; Posting content depicting the use of alcohol or drug-related activities; Failing to respect the privacy and rights of others; Posting content that negatively reflects (directly or indirectly) on Arcadia University, the Athletics Department, faculty, staff, school officials, or students; and Bullying.
Social Media – The Ugly! Possible Penalties Failure to adhere to this policy & guidelines will result in a mandatory meeting with your head coach and/or an athletics administrator. Individuals found to be in violation of team/department rules may face sanctions, including, but not limited to: Verbal or written warning; Assignment of verbal or written apology; Mandatory education; Counseling; Community service; Suspension from practice/competition or removal from the team; Termination of athletics eligibility; Additional penalties imposed by the sport head coach or athletics administrator; and Additional penalties imposed by the NCAA or MAC
Sportsmanship Good sportsmanship includes, but is not limited to: Unsportsmanlike behavior includes, but is not limited to: Observing and supporting the rules of the sport; Fighting; Promoting the spirit, as well as the letter of the rules; Ejection; Placing fairness as a goal in all competition; Spitting; Taking personal responsibility for high standards of play; Showing civility toward competitors, coaches, officials and spectators; Commending good effort by teammates, opponents, and officials; Playing cleanly while playing hard; Showing maturity and integrity on and off the field of play; and Being a gracious winner and accepting defeat gracefully. Use of obscene gestures, profanity, or provocative language (including racist, sexual or homophobic or bigoted remarks); Taunting and/or intimidating actions; Inappropriate celebrations with intent to demean opponents; Intentional incitement of others toward abusive or violent action; and Disrespectful attitude toward opponents, officials or game administrators.
Roster Management Head coaches maintain the discretion to remove team members for a number of reasons, including but not limited to: Academic or athletic performance Conduct issues Failure to meet general expectations Inability to meet minimum performance standards When student-athlete negatively impacts team culture Coaches have final say on: Team/squad membership Travel teams Playing time Positions Team strategy
Conflict Resolution Recommendations for conflict resolution between coach and student-athlete: Student should request a meeting with that coach or staff member Oftentimes, it is helpful to put your concerns in writing before the meeting Share personal views on the matter face-to-face Work toward a collective understanding of the issue and collaborative resolution of the problem If initial attempts are unsuccessful, the student may request a meeting with the Director of Athletics (or his designee) with the following understandings: Student must document concerns via email to the Athletics Director AD reserves the right to include the staff member or other interested parties when the meeting takes place AD will not meet with students regarding playing time, play calling, team strategy, roster management, or other matters that fall under the auspice of the head coach.
Parental Involvement Goal is for the student and staff member to resolve the conflict with one another If a parent requests a meeting with the Athletics Director: They will be reminded of our goal of student self-advocacy and the appropriate channels of communication (student-to-coach and student-to-administration) Parent must inform the student they are requesting to meet with the AD Parent must request the meeting in writing via email and provide an explanation of why the meeting is needed AD reserves the right to decline the meeting if the student is not well-informed Parent should expect the AD to discuss the matter with all involved parties (student and staff member) in order to make an informed decision related to the meeting AD will decide if student and/or staff member should be present for meeting AD will not meet with parents regarding playing time, play calling, team strategy, roster management, or other matters that fall under the auspice of the head coach.
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor – Rose Katz One rep & one alternate per team selected by head coach and three executive board members (President, Vice President, Secretary) Regular meetings (mandatory attendance) Main areas of focus: Provide feedback and insight into key athletics department issues Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus Review proposed NCAA legislation Organize community service efforts Help foster school spirit
Hosting Recruits Department of Athletics expects hosts to: Conduct themselves in a responsible manner at all times, keep the recruit on time for all appointments, and attend all functions with the recruit unless excused by the head coach. Do not leave recruit alone while they are visiting; Ensure that the recruit is not put in a situation where they are in the presence of alcohol or other drugs. The use of any illegal substance or engaging in any illegal activity will not be tolerated and may result in disciplinary action; Be mindful of the general health and safety of the recruit; Contact the head coach or Public Safety (x 2999) immediately in the case of emergency; and Adhere to all applicable NCAA regulations and team rules.
Travel Release Forms Expected to travel to/from an away contest with team Exceptions are at the discretion of the head coach Travel Release Form must be filled out if the student will not travel to or from an away contest with the team Under 18 – need parents signature Do the form in advance of the trip – not on game-day
Student-Athlete Refunds If a student-athlete quits or is removed from a team, refunds apply as follows: Practice Gear & Team Apparel: No refunds Team Training Trips: Will reimburse what Arcadia is able to retrieve from vendor (travel agency, airline, etc. ) Not all monies are refundable due to booking deadlines, fees, number of rooms booked and amount needed due to revised travel party, etc. Team Activities/Initiatives: Recommend pay-as-you-go Refunds at discretion of head coach General Team Fundraising (including letter-writing campaigns): No refunds
