Goal 1: Assist all students who are academically underprepared to: 1) 2) 3) Successfully complete developmental education Enroll in a credit-bearing program of study Persist to graduation Initiative: Redesign of learning support through the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) of 1) ENGL 0099/1101 2) ENGL/READ 0097 – ENGL 0977 3) READ 0099/ARTS 1101 4) MATH 0997/1103

ALP ENGL 0099/ENGL 1101 • Students who need ENGL 0989 can elect to take ENGL 0099 with its corequisite ENGL 1101. This model provides just-in-time learning support and acts as a required writing center to help students succeed in college English. Students who successfully complete both courses will meet their learning support requirements AND earn credit toward a degree program. • In Fall 2016, we increased access by allowing students who are coming to register in ANY section of ENGL 1101 rather than only accepting those students who take the ENGL 1101 course with the same instructor. • Next steps: Move sentence-level work into a hybrid portion done in an online platform as is currently effective in ENGL 0989. Does seat time spent working on composition skills increase student engagement and success as it does in ENGL 0989?

ENGL 0977: Foundations of Reading &Writing • Integrates our entry-level developmental reading (READ 0097)

ENGL 0977: Foundations of Reading &Writing • Integrates our entry-level developmental reading (READ 0097) and developmental writing (ENGL 0097) course. • Result is a more robust course that emphasizes the juxtaposition of reading, writing, and critical thinking objectives. The teaching of grammar is integrated and prescriptive, and writing objectives align with reading objectives (focus on main idea, organization etc. ). • Next steps: ACCUPLACER resets at end of semester will help to determine growth. Follow-up on student achievement in subsequent courses (particularly ENGL 1010 and ENGL 0989) will speak to course effectiveness and help direct needed revisions to the implementation of course objectives.

ALP READ 0099/ARTS 1101 • Students who need READ 0098 can elect to take READ 0099 with its co-requisite ARTS 1101. Model engages students in an authentic application of basic reading skills by using their art textbook as the anchor text for the READ 0099 class as well as for the ARTS 1101 course. Students who successfully complete both courses will meet their learning support requirements AND earn credit toward a degree program. • In Spring 2017, we increased access by modifying the prerequisites to include students who are coming to READ 0098 from READ 0097 rather than only accepting those students who test into it. • Next steps: Determining effectiveness of READ 0099 as a substitute for READ 0098. How do success rates in subsequent coursework compare for both groups of students as well as for the READ 0097 subgroup?

Math Lab: MATH 0097/0098/0099 • Mathematics discipline is dedicated to providing students with assistance throughout the entire learning process. The Math Lab's mission is to help Learning Support math students develop proficiency in mathematical procedures by providing guidance on routine homework problems. • We make it a priority to maintain a nurturing environment for students to ask questions and to learn to do work. Each full-time faculty member of the department is willing to work individually with students. • Students may need assistance at times when full-time faculty members are not available. Therefore, additional assistance is made available in the Math Lab, facilitated by the math lab manager. • The Math Lab is open • Monday –Thursday: 9 am - 7 pm • Friday: 9 am - 1 pm

Math Lab: MATH 0097/0098/0099 • We welcome students with all ability levels. Full-time and part-time faculty work with the lab manager to provide individual and small group assistance. • The Math Lab has about 40 computers, which include the general software a student finds on campus, as well as full Internet access. Software that is course specific has been installed to allow students to work with or without tutoring assistance. • During the first week of classes, an introduction to the Math Lab is given to each math class. This ensures that students in the LS Math classes are able to find the Math Lab and understand how it can assist them. Available services and rules of use are explained at this time and posted on the bulletin board. • Students who begin using the Math Lab at this level continue to use our services through their LS math courses here at ATC.
