ATF 2 Magnets • • Purpose and main topics of meeting The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the participation in the ATF 2 project of the three IN 2 P 3 groups at LAL-Orsay, LAPP-Annecy and LLRPolytechnique, following approval and initial funding by the newly created French research funding agency ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). The topics covered are – beam tuning/optimization and participation in the commissioning, – GEANT 4 modeling of the beam line and simulations to estimate backgrounds from beam losses, – support and active stabilization of the final doublet and equipment, – related beam instrumentation, – porting of results to the final focus of a linear collider and analysis of impact. • • The meeting agenda will revolve around these topics to review the current activities and status in each, and help orient and integrate the starting IN 2 P 3 effort. ALL TALKS in the 3 day meeting CAN BE FOUND HERE: http: //ilcagenda. cern. ch/conference. Display. py? conf. Id=1176 This report concentrates on the magnets for the final doublet region. 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 2

ATF 2 Magnets Suggested spacing of 2 quads & 2 sextupoles on special CLIC table 26 Sept 06 NOTE: 450 mm is QD 0 core length. Overall length = 546. 1 mm. FD quads, QD 0, QF 1 using old FFTB quad “QC 3” style. BPM fits at one end only. At other end coils, fittings & terminals stick out 72. 5 mm. Quad bore value under discussionwill be less than 60 mm Sextupoles being designed. Bore ? 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 10

ATF 2 Magnets New Magnets Being Made for the ATF 2 part 2/4 • Two final doublet quads: QD 0, QF 1, being fabricated by enlarging bore of 2 existing quads of the FFTB “QC-3” style. – Remaining question I’d like agreement on today: size of enlarged bore. As explained in my Monday 9 th October talk I’d like to make new bore 49 mm in diameter. – Will work on disassembly, EDM’ing poletips, re-assembly and magnetic measurements between now and March 2007. 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 13

ATF 2 Magnets New Magnets Being Made for the ATF 2 part 3/4 •

ATF 2 Magnets New Magnets Being Made for the ATF 2 part 3/4 • Five new sextupoles are needed: 3 in the FF: SD 4, SF 5 and SF 6 and 2 in the “final doublet” (interleaved with final 2 quads): SF 1 and SD 0. • Considerations of available Z space and height of ATF 2 beam lead us to make new and different designs for the FF and FD sextupoles. • SF 1 & SD 0: – – will have (large) S-band BPMs attached to their core their bore should match the QD 0/QF 1 bore (= 49 mm) Cores can be somewhat longer than 90 mm their cores may need to fit in with a wider FFTB mover than the “QMAG” style & must put bore at 1. 2 m from floor 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 14

ATF 2 Magnets New Magnets Being Made for the ATF 2 part 4/4 •

ATF 2 Magnets New Magnets Being Made for the ATF 2 part 4/4 • FF sextupoles: another new design needs to be made with these features: – Bore to be same as adjacent QEA quads: 32 mm diameter – Coil end shape to be compatible with a C-band BPM – Core to be ~90 mm long (OK with a 32 mm bore) – Bottom of core to be flat, to sit directly on a “QMAG” mover T plate. Distance between core bottom and bore center to be 295 mm – Vertical distance between bottom of T plate (under a mover) and magnet bore center to be 541 mm. • Will be over 7 months from now (at earliest) before 5 sextupoles are designed, made and measured. 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 15

ATF 2 Magnets Two important questions about the FD magnets for ATF 2 we considered • Question #1. Will the 4 FD magnets and their S band BPMs fit on the CLIC table? - overall length is the issue. • Answer #1. Yes (Okugi analysis of layout). • Question #2. Can they have FFTB magnet movers under them and have centers of their apertures match the 1. 2 m beam height off ATF 2 floor? • Answer #2. A new very short support has been designed that fits under the FD quads’ movers’ T plate and puts bore center at 1. 2 m (see Nicolas Geffroy presentation this workshop 11 Oct 06) 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 16

ATF 2 Magnets What SLAC equipment LAPP needs to thoroughly test the CLIC table

ATF 2 Magnets What SLAC equipment LAPP needs to thoroughly test the CLIC table • A QC 3 quad: Spencer is negotiating with SABER project group at SLAC who suddenly think they might need the 3 rd QC 3 quad (we know where it is stored at SLAC). Could lend it to LAPP until Feb 2007, maybe longer. • The QC 3 -style FFTB mover (=wider T plate) to go under the borrowed QC 3 quad. • Three other FFTB movers • Electronics and cables to run the 4 movers • 2 Streckeisen “STS 2” sensors: Spencer to enquire at SLAC 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 17

ATF 2 Magnets Agreed Upon Movement of old FFTB movers • Send 24 less wide movers & their electronics and cables to KEK very soon • Send one wide mover and 3 less wide movers & their electronics and cables to LAPP very soon (John Seeman has to be convinced to lend us a spare “QC 3” for a few months) • Keep one less wide mover at SLAC • On 24 th October: 4 movers crated up for LAPP and awaiting shipping documentation 24 October 2006 Cherrill Spencer, SLAC October 2006 Annecy Mtg 22
