Everyone Plays® Our goal is for kids to play soccer – so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least 3 quarters of every game. It’s no fun to spend the game on the bench…and that’s no way to learn soccer! Everyone Plays® 1) In our region: No player plays a full game until all players play three-fourths. AYSO Region 41 - Fall 2018 Coaches Meeting 6

Everyone Plays® • The "Everyone Plays" rule applies to all players, regardless of skill level, age, attitude, and regardless of the number of practices they attend. How Coaches Help • Keep track of who’s playing when AND where • Give all players a chance to play all positions at some point during the season – They MAY play the same position throughout the entire game. • The same players should not always sit out the first quarter of each game, so that they do not think of themselves as permanent substitutes. AYSO Region 41 - Fall 2018 Coaches Meeting 7

Everyone Plays® Substitution • 5 U-14 U: Approximately midway through each half. • At half-time. NO substitutions on the fly! • For injury. Substitution for injury: • If player is injured, the coach may provide a substitute. Injured player may not return until beginning of next “quarter”. Quarter is credited only to injured player. • Coach may choose not to substitute and to “play short” until injured player is ready to return to play the remainder of the “quarter”. (Wait for signal of referee. ) AYSO Region 41 - Fall 2018 Coaches Meeting 8

Balanced Teams How Coaches Help • If one team is short players for a game – The other team may loan them a substitute to make the numbers equal • If one team is dominating another – BOTH coaches should discuss the matter and take steps to alleviate the domination • At the end of the Fall season all coaches will be asked to rate their players. – This will help us do a better job of balancing next year • Absolutely NO switching of players! Teams are balanced. In exceptional cases: thru division coordinator, both coaches agree PLUS okay from Regional Commissioner! AYSO Region 41 - Fall 2018 Coaches Meeting 10

Your RC’s Top Tips • Always praise your players. Do not criticize or humiliate anyone. • Focus on the positive and don’t say too much after a tough game. • Point out what they did well, tell them to have a great weekend, and then say see you at practice on. . . That’s it. • Make the focus on fun, learning, and improvement, not winning. • Always put the safety and health of the kids first. • Do not allow your players or supporters to badmouth anyone. • Play everyone equally and avoid playing favorites. • Be kind to all players, parents, other teams/coaches, and referees. • Let the kids learn from their mistakes – Do not be a “JOYSTICK” coach. • In other words, coach during practice, not during the game. • Give everyone a chance to score, especially at 8 U and under. • At the end of the season, ask yourself – Did all my players have fun, did they learn, and do they want to come back next season. • If the answer to these questions is “Yes, ” you have been an outstanding coach!
