ASVAB Career Exploration System Information Session May 2, 2019
Why take the ASVAB? Taking the ASVAB unlocks the Career Exploration Program Once you review the results and take the FYI (more later on this), use what you learned about yourself to find potential occupations through OCCU-Find (more later on this too!) • Look for opportunities to learn more and explore these occupations while in high school. • Ask yourself these questions: • • What additional education, training or certification is needed? How and where can I obtain additional education, training, certification? What is the future outlook for this occupation? Do I know someone currently in this occupation?
Why take the ASVAB, continued… Taking the ASVAB provides you with a Military Entrance Score Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) • These scores were not released to the armed forces. • If you are interested in joining the Military, it is best to discuss this score with a recruiter. The AFQT score is what the Military will use to determine enlistment eligibility. • Military uses 11 th or 12 th grade ASVAB scores for enlistment.
Why take the ASVAB, continued… Part of the Tennessee READY Graduate Indicator: Measures the probability of seamlessly enrolling in a postsecondary education and securing high quality enrollment. • ACT composite score of 21 or… • 4 EPSOs or… • 2 EPSOs & earn an industry certification or… • Complete 2 EPSOs & earn an ASVAB AFQT score of 31
Ready Grad EPSO Examples Early Postsecondary Opportunities • AP (complete course & take exam) • Dual Enrollment (complete course) • Industry Certification (IC)- earn passing score on exam and/or complete licensure requirements
You have taken the ASVAB. Now what? • Your ASVAB Summary Results sheet includes an access code you will use to login to this site: asvabprogram. com • Take the FYI- Find Your Interests- 90 item interest inventory designed to help students identify work-related interests. • Takes 10 -15 minutes. • The FYI is based on John Holland’s widely accepted theory of career choice which identifies six basic personality types.
Login to www. asvabprogram. com 1. 2. Access Code !
FYI (Find Your Interests) • The FYI inventory asks students respond to items by indicating a preference for the various activities presented to them. Based on the answers to these items, the FYI determines the student’s resemblance to each of six interest types (RIASEC types). • When students complete the FYI, they will receive three Top Interest Codes to use in conjunction with the OCCU-Find for career exploration. When students log into the site again, the website will display the top interest codes, so students can continue career exploration on your own. • The FYI can help them identify their work-related interests and can, in turn, help them determine career fields or occupations that are potentially satisfying.
