ASSURE Model Collaborative Project EDTC 6321 Summer 2012 Instructor: Dr. Sam Pan Team 4: Sharon Moore & Adam Rethlake
Overview of the ASSURE Model The model is a well-known Instructional Systems Design (ISD) guide based on Gagne’s Events of Instruction It incorporates the use of multimedia and technology improve the learning process Implementation the model considers the learner’s: needs, motivations, and critical thinking skills
The ASSURE Model Includes 6 steps:
Analyze Learners The first step is to identify the learners General characteristics age, gender, grade, psychological, cultural, socioeconomic issues, etc. Specific entry competencies prior knowledge, skills, and attitudes Learning styles kinesthetic, visual, auditory learners
State Objectives The second step is to state the objective Objectives should be aligned with the learners and the overarching goal They must be clearly written, describe the intended outcome and be measurable Well-written objectives follow the ABCD format
State Objectives (continued) ABCD Format AUDIENCE Who is the intended audience? Your learners? BEHAVIOR What do you expect the students to learn? What will learners be able to do after instruction? CONDITIONS Under what conditions are the students learning? DEGREE What is the degree to which objectives should be mastered? What is the minimum level of competency required?
Select Methods, Media, and Materials The third step is the selection of instructional method, media, and materials Determine the appropriate instructional method Select media formats that meet the needs of the audience Decide what other materials may be used
Utilize Media and Materials The third step is to plan how you are going to integrate your multimedia and materials Review each multimedia tool and/or materials you plan to use Use the 5 P’s to guide you in the implementation of them: Preview the material Prepare the environment Prepare the learners Provide the learning experience
Require Learner Participation The fourth step is to determine how to get learners to engage and actively participate Decide which activities you will use to get learners involved Here are some activities to consider: songs, games, group/team projects, Power. Point presentations, etc. Activities should allow learners to practice, self- checks and opportunities to demonstrate skills
Evaluate and Revise The final step of this model is to determine if instruction was effective Do not forget to reflect and evaluate student performance, media, and instructor In this step, ask questions such as this: Did learners master the lesson’s objective? Was the media effective? What changes need to be considered to improve instruction? Make appropriate revisions to ensure learning occurs
Conclusion The ASSURE Model ensures the design of effective instruction by using multimedia and technology that leads to successful learning opportunities.
