Universal Design for Learning n The term Universal Design for Learning (UDL), advanced from the field of architecture. The term started in architectural design when federal mandates provided for universal access to buildings and structures for individuals with disabilities Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -2 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. UDL n The definition, derived from the meaning found in Section 3 of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 refers to as a concept or philosophy for designing and delivering products and services that are usable by people with the widest range of functional capabilities and that include products and services that are directly usable (without requiring assistive technology) and products and services that are made usable with assistive technology Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -3 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. UDL n One way to achieve this is to respond to individual differences by using the concept of UDL which provides a map for creating flexible goals, strategies, resources, and assessments that accommodate the needs of a diverse group of learners Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -4 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. UDL n n n It is important to remember that UDL is more than a technology: It is a philosophy that drives the creation of the UDL classroom. UDL provides equal access to learning for all students, and it is in place before any student enters a classroom. Technology will play a critical role in designing a classroom for all students Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -5 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. UDL n n AT provides access that meets the individual needs of each student with a disability. However, more and more educators are becoming increasingly aware and make use of AT as a means to meet the needs of all students within their classroom Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -6 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. Response to Intervention (RTI) n n RTI is a multilayered prevention system that can prevent academic and social failure before a student is unnecessarily or prematurely identified as having a disability. RTI models utilize anywhere from 2 -4 tiers of interventions. The tiers in part depend on the needs of the student and how well the instructor can deliver the instruction at each tier. RTI and UDL n RTI and UDL compliment each other in that they both relate to the education of all students. n n The RTI is more process oriented and is utilized to make decisions of a student who is at risk for school failure. The RTI helps to make decisions as to what specific interventions are best and meet the needs for each child to be successful in accessing the general education curriculum. RTI and UDL n n The UDL assists a student in being as successful as possible in the general education curriculum. The RTI and the UDL are both aimed at improving student outcomes by providing educational supports Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -9 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc. RTI and UDL n n RTI and UDL provide for the creation and design of instructional materials and activities that enable students with differing abilities to attain learning goals RTI and UDL products present multiple approaches to meet the needs of diverse learners and allow educators to customize teaching for individual differences Assistive Technology: Access for All Students, 2 e - Beard / Carpenter / Johnston ISBN: 0137056427 2 -10 © 2011, 2007 Pearson Education, Inc.
