• Assimilation is a common phonological process by which one sound becomes more like a nearby sound. This can occur either within a word or between words.
• It occurs in normal speech, and it becomes more common in more rapid speech. In rapid speech • for example, "handbag" is often pronounced /ˈhæmbæɡ/. Instead of the pronunciations /ˈhænˌbæɡ/ or /ˈhændˌbæɡ/
Assimilation Types
Progressive • If the phoneme changes to match the preceding phoneme • Examples: Examples • Voiced/v ist/ /d/ becomes /t/ to agree in voicing with /s/ • Dogs/dogz/ /s/ becomes /z/ to agree in voicing with /g/ • Rapid /rəpit/ /d/becomes/t/ to agree with /i/
Regressive • If the phoneme changes to match the following phoneme • examples: • gone past /gom pa: st/ /m/ replaces /n/ good morning / gub m : niŋ/ Have to /hæftu/
Coalescence • If two phoneme fuse completely together to give a new totally different sound • Examples : • Picture/pikt∫ə: / • Would you /wʊdʒu/ • Don`t you / dəʊntʃu/ • Should you /∫udʒu/
Reciprocal • If there is a mutual influence between two phoneme • Identical • If two phonemes fuse completely together • to give a new totally adjacent sound.
