Part 2 Element 1 –The Proposal Form 1. Project proposal form (15 marks) This form is to give your tutor enough information to properly help and advise you. Fill it out to the best of your ability, based on your research and knowledge so far. The form also requires you to present your design brief and performance and marketing specifications. The design brief will help your tutor to understand what you are hoping to achieve in your project work. You need to describe the identified problem or opportunity in terms of your design goals, the design context, relevant constraints and important criteria. See the Block 2 Guide Section 7 for more explanation. Write approximately 150 words for this. Continued

Project proposal form continued: • Performance specification: this will form the basis for the development of your ideas in future assignments, so it is important to allocate time for this. Specify, in general terms, what a potential new product or service should be able to do and any characteristics that it should have. You are not expected to provide detailed solutions at this stage. See the Block 2 Guide Section 7 for more explanation. Write approximately 150 words for this. • The marketing specification will also be an important reference as you work on future assignments, so spend time on this. You specification should include your sources of information about users and markets, information about competing or comparable products and the characteristics of your target market. See the Block 2 Guide Section 7 for more explanation. Write approximately 150 words for this. Both specifications should be based on the research that you have done to identify possible markets and the needs and wishes of users. The word limits on these sections of the form are for guidance. It is acceptable to use bullet points for the brief and specifications.

Block 2 Guide • Part 2 of the Block 2 Guide outlines in some detail how to go about selecting your project ‘product’ as well as how to approach each of the sections of the proposal form. • Note that Section 5. 1 of the guide allows you to interpret the term ‘product’ in a general way so as to include processes or systems. • The object of the proposal form is for your tutor to approve your choice using a number of criteria, many of which are included on the form for you to think about. She/he will use their experience to advise on your project choice when returning your TMA.

My Advice • • My advice is to avoid esoteric projects that need specialised knowledge, keep your idea simple (KISS principle), and to be honest in your answers on the proposal form so your tutor can assess your idea’s suitability (relevance, feasibility and viability) My own opinion is that physical products are perhaps a better fit to the requirements of the final project report than some ones based upon systems or processes – but it is just my opinion! There are exceptions and I have no problem in your choosing appropriate systems or processes as products.
