The Arc of this Unit: From Ideal to Real Age of “Isms” (1815 -1848) Ideas and beliefs = most important States UNRESPONSIVE • Conservatism • Romanticism • Liberalism • Nationalism Age of Realism and Nationalism What can be done within reality Responsive Nation State Conservatives still in control but they stop acting so conservative all the time. They become NEW conservatives, or Realpolitiks where some of their reforms might seem liberal or even socialist to you. Don’t be fooled the “politics of reality” has only one goal: keeping power.

The story of this next part of our unit Monarchs realize that they have to reform in order to maintain power. They also realize that they can use Nationalism to their advantage as a means to control their nation. The German states unified into a larger Germany. The Italian states unify into a larger Italy. With this new confidence, monarchs realize that their main enemy is NOT the middle class and lower classes of their country but EACH OTHER – this signals the end of the Congress of Vienna’s influence. Diplomacy is out of style – war is “in”

Terms for the Age of Nation States • Realpolitik – Literally: policy based on considerations of power alone. The goal of realpolitik is to maintain power at all costs: whether through use of violence or through reform. • Popular art – REALISM • Nation-state: An independent political unit of modern times based on representing a united people.
