Curriculum 2014 • Literacy: Strong emphasis on spelling and vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. • Balance retained by maintaining a strong focus on the creative use of language and developing an understanding of different text types. • Mathematics: the new programme of study for mathematics is organised into domains focussed on number, measurement, geometry, statistics, ratio and proportion and algebra. • The curriculum may appear quite challenging as some content is covered in earlier year groups than was the case previously.

Why did levels disappear? • New focus on developing a sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge in each level. • Secondary schools generally felt that some pupils were not ready for the challenges of secondary school despite achieving relatively high levels at primary school.

How is Colston’s dealing with these changes? • Assessment Principles Research • ‘Rising Stars Education’s framework for reading and writing • Maths: revaluation of the best way to plan and teach the new national curriculum. • Maths tests that will help us assess the children’s progress across each year. • Ensuring that we have an assessment framework that helps us identify next steps in learning as well as tracking progress. • Looking outwards
