Definition of Assessment: v Is the process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs.
Different Types of assessment: v Formative and Summative Assessment v Objective and Subjective Assessment v Criterion-referenced and Norm-referenced Assessment v Informal and Formal Assessment There are many different assessment in the world but these four listed are the most important distinctions.
Summative and Formative Assessment: v Summative Assessment: Is generally carried out at the end of a course or project. v Formative Assessment: Is generally carried out throughout a course or project. There are two other forms for Formative Assessment which is diagnostic and self assessment.
Objective and subjective assessment: v Objective Assessment: Is a form of questioning which has a single correct answer. Objective questions include true/false, multiple choice, multipleresponse and matching questions. v Subjective Assessment: Is a form of questioning which may have more than on current answer(or more than one way of expressing the correct answer. Subjective questions include extended-response questions and essays.
Criterion-referenced and referenced Assessment: Norm- v Criterions-referenced assessment: Typically using a criterionreferenced test, as the name implies, occurs when candidates are measured against defined (and objective) criteria. Examples: Driver ED test or Performance test v Norm-referenced assessment: Is a type of assessment or evaluation which yields an estimate of the position of the tested individual in a predefined population, with respect to the trait being measured. Examples: EOCE or FSA
Informal and Formal Assessment: v Formal assessment: Is usually a written document. Formal assessment is given a numerical score or grade based on student performance. Examples: Test, Quiz, or Paper v Informal assessment: Does not contribute to a student’s final grade. Examples: Observations, Inventories, Participation, Peer and self evaluation, and Discussion.
Task for the students: v Now since you learned about different assessment and how they work. You have to write 3 Multiple choice questions and 2 True/False questions based on the article you read in the beginning of class, don’t forget you must include one of the assessment types in each question. Due by Wednesday April 20 th, 2016
